onions, our mortal enemies

Postby XkillerX » Mon Apr 09, 2007 11:23 am

i was an avid onion fan througout my childhood. i'd eat onions with anything i could. anything and everything, literally. about 10 years ago, though, my tummy started pointing it out for me that it's not really enthusiastic about my onion-love as it once was. so as time went by i had to leave onions behind because the mere smell of them makes my gut wrench. the only way i can eat an onion now is... NONE. period. onions in any form (raw, cooked, fried, mashed, etc) give me gasses and blow me up horribly. and takes pretty much all day for it to calm down, or more.

point being, about a year ago my sister started getting the same symptoms about onions. neither our parents have any problems with onions, nor anyone we know. any ideas or suggestions?
Next time, I'll spend the money on drugs instead.

My friend (not vegan) has exactly that problem. Once she had a bite of some pasta dish ith hidden onions in it and was gagging for ages even though she didn't know there were onions till after she'd eaten some! She's always been that way though, and I guess some of it might be psychological.
From what I know, food intolerances are built up by excessive amounts of that food or certain chemicals in it, so maybe you're body literally got sick of onions from when you loved them? Thing is, though that after six weeks exclusion you should eb able to incoporate them back in to your diet without any problems, and if it's been ten years, you must have it pretty badly!
Maybe you should see a holistic nutritionist if you're in to that kind of thing, or a food intolerance specialist such as at Holland and Barret ect? Good luck.

I think our bodies protect us from overdosing on any food or such by limiting our intake of it. Thus, when we eat to much of a certain food, then our body becomes intolerant of it like it's intolerant of a virus. I'm not a doctor, though.

If you're really crazy about onions, then I'd go see an allergist to get several treatments of a "desensitizing" agent which usually stops your body from reacting. In other words, back to normal.

It could be expensive so you should check with your insurance carrier.

Neither my OH or I can eat onions without getting bad gas and bloating. So we avoid them.
Strangely we can eat garlic easy-peasy, and sometimes a little onion if it is well cooked and mixed in with something. Odd.

I've got a food sensitivity to onions, garlic, and the whole family. Headaches and nausea follow..

I've gotta say - that's not very compassionate. True allergies are a seriously life threatening immune reaction, not a psychosomatic ailment.
Intolerances obviously not that serious, but not to be sniffed at as they can make people feel pretty rough. Maybe if you don't suffer it's hard to understand, but how about just trying to drop the overcompensatory macho thing and wise the f**k up.

Funny video, but if you're being serious, jin2, you're extremely misplaced. While there are people out there with a strong dislike of something which they pass off as an allergy, or an intolerance. These people are dangerous as there are equally individuals which will experience severe discomfort through to death upon consuming trace amounts of an allergen they're sensitive to.

Ever hear of allergic bronchpneumonial asthma? where exposure to ubiquitous allergens makes life unbearable, and can cause adult respiratory distress syndrome, predispose to highly dangerous fungal infections and even kill?

Ever hear of anaphylactic shock? Anyone thinking allergy sufferers are soft, flowery little pansies who should get a cold shower and a kick up the arse should experience the charm of rapid cardiovascular collapse and complete constriction and occlusion of one's airways leading to respiratory arrest. Then tell me allergy sufferers need to harden the fuck up, okay?

yeah i dont think its good for ppl to call themselves allergic unless they truly are tho i understand why they do because as soon as someone says they are intolerant or avoid certain foods, then ppl often assume that you will make an exception this time or will be ok with a little of said forbidden ingredient...

Sorry if I offended, it was all tongue in cheek... I guess it's a bit of an Australian humour thing =(

The guy in the video is a parody of an Australian stand-over man/murderer of which a movie was made a couple of years ago.
He's what would be widely called in Australia a bogan, or in the U.K a chav or ned etc...
