10min Pushup Contest!

Postby Dave Noisy » Fri Feb 10, 2006 3:26 am

The idea started here:

http://www.veganporn.com/documents.pl?m ... 1052277795

Basically, some veggie dude does 114 'finger' pushups in 1mins...wooo!

I comment that i'd be surprised if anyone on the site (VeganPorn) can do 114 in 10mins...so i give 'er a try..

Start off with a massive PB (25!! Previous PB was 18 a month ago...) and then went downhill from there..but managed to squeeze off 81..!

My co-competetor Irene (another vegan cyclist!) just about caught me with 72!! Amazing!!! Gotta get her to sign-up and get on the strength table!

Anyway...the contest is on! How many pushups can you do in 10mins? =)

EDIT - Flat-palmed - not fingertip!

Sorry, my bad! Just regular pushups, fingertips not necessary..

Come on people!! I can still barely move my arms, and i'm a complete weakling compared to most of ya's! (Just check out the strength table! I'm stronger than one guy...who only did 2 of the 3 lifts..!!)

Mamby pamby wusses!

well, I just did 17 on the fingertips and 8 on the knuckles before I got bored and stopped . Might try some other day when I have gotten rid of this illness that seems to do its best to annoy the hell out of me.

I was going to leave this until the evening, having already worn my arms out with my mantis pushups before work, but i can't resist these challenges...

The way to do this is to do a modest amount very frequently, not go for a PB and be in agony for the rest of it hehe.

So, ignoring my own advice, I began with a new PB of 41 in the 57 seconds.

In 10 minutes, I did 103, which shows how knackered I was after getting almost halfway there in the first minute... Should have knocked out 400+ in that time. I wish! :D

Also, I don't see how anyone could do 114 pushups in 1 minute, unless he was doing them halfway. The physics of going through an up and down cycle, almost twice per second seems pretty impossible if you're doing a full extension on each rep.

I worked out that gravity will drop you to the floor from full extension during a pushup in 0.2 - 0.25 seconds.

For a 6 ft tall person with average torso size and 2 ft (.6096 m) reach between chest and end of fingertips when extended for fingertip pushups, I calculate that it would take around .35 s for gravity to pull someone that size down. I used Image to come up with this number.

JP you could be onto something. If the guy has short arms and a thick torso he could shrink the time per rep a lot.

Wow - nice numbers!! Keep 'em coming! And post your sets too, it's fun to read the numbers as they descend. =P

If you go to the original VP link, there's now a link to the video of the guy doing them, and it is LAME. He basically bobs his shoulders up and down. I could prolly do that.

Still, let's keep the 10min race up! I'll post a chart once we get some more #'s. =)

I do a set of pushups every month or so and always seem to get a PB. Last time it was 35.

Here're my sets for yesterday:-
41 <-PB
7
6
11
5
5
5
8
6
7
2 <-ran out of time :D

I did it flathanded because I don't like doing them on fingers. Next week I will try it that way. I say next week because I'm fairly sore today  and my schedule doesn't allow much room for such over-doing it.

Awesome. Should be fun. Are you going to keep charts for both flat-palmed and fingertips?
