Vegan Regional Football League

Postby Spyder » Sun Oct 09, 2005 9:22 pm

Hey everyone

I wondered if anyone's thought of this :

A vegan football league where vegans from all across the country make regional teams and play in a structered league.
I love the game but there's no one locally to play it with (especially no vegans), it could be a great way for us to socialise, keep fit, be creative, have fun and bring the vegan fitness community closer together under the umbrella of our National sport.

And of course it could involve other sports, music, food (obviously). And if we got the balance right it could be formal and big enough so it's worth it, but informal and intimate enough so it's all about having fun.

what do you think? I think there's a big gap in the vegan community for a more regional ongoing type of social connection like this. :)

I also love football, although i am shite! and would be well up for arranging something - could be just a five-a-side mini league or something??

would there be enough ppl to make it viable?
personally ive had enough of playing team sports. too much ego, competitiveness and if your face dont fit... etc.

may be generalising but i would imagine there are proportionately far more passive types in vegan land than in the general population making it more difficult to recruit players

They would probably have to be unisex teams to get enough people.

I'd happily play, but i really really can't describe how bad i am at football! However, i dont mind looking stupid if it means that others join up with the knowledge that they wont be the worst player there!

Your going to have alot of trouble organising a national league here; people are spread to far between and only a minority are active e.g. my attempt at organising a single lifting session only attracted one other London Vegan: the co-organiser Tarz.

If you are serious mayhaps you should contact some local vegan social groups like essex vegans and london vegans etc, to see if they would be game. This way you already have regional teams organised.

hmm my earlier post was a tad negative so here's a more +ve one!

how about having sporting events/comps at the various vegan fayres around the country? youd get a high concentration of vegans in one place which you could draw upon if short of numbers. after the exertions go to the fayre for refueling!

actually participating in a team sport with considerate vegans wouldnt be that bad come to think of it

Thanks for all your comments!

Veganbiker - 5 a side is great! all we'd need is to find a sports hall we could hire out, split the cost between us and we have the beginnings of something cool, and in the Summer take it outdoors. good call man!

Mooovert, if you mean the kind of sport mentality of school, then I totally agree, egoes can't be tolerated, I don't think this'll be a problem though. Although a little bit of competition I think would be cool, especially if LittleGirlBunny and other girls got involved, it could be VERY cool ;)
And you're right, it would be a good idea to get it involved with Vegan fayres and festivals, absolutely.

littlegirlbunny - Unisex would be excellent! This is something that annoys me about society and schools, people who aren't "natural" at a sport just get pushed down and are always the last to be picked, so they feel bad and don't get a chance to play.
If we do something with this then I would have to insist that it's open to everyone who enjoys the sport, even if you think you're shit but would love to play YOU CAN PLAY!
Of course as time goes by everyone's going to improve to various degrees anyway! so the whole idea of not allowing to play is ridiculous.

Then later in the development of this if we have players who want to take it up a level we can create a serious league..... or maybe just a team to join up in already existing leagues with the carnivores? that could be quite cool... picking out of the country a vegan side to work our way up the divisions...hmm....

Thanks for the links and advice GenTDuke! You're right, if it was to be serious it would have to either build up slowly, or collaborate with an already established vegan society like the ones you've mentioned, especially if the aim is to design a league because of the reasons you've posted.
We could get involved with the various societies to help spread the message and get a buzz going around the UK.

I love watching football, I love playing football and I would love to somehow make this work.

I'm going to do some research on the various vegan societies around the country, maybe get a poll on this site to see what people think and see if this is a goer. And if it is then I'll start putting together a website to advertise the idea, start looking around for some venues and hopefully get more people involved.

What do you think? do you think this is a goer? or am I just having a moment of insanity? it's late 3:06am so perhaps I'm just going insane! :D

jeeez....sorry this is so long!
please let me know if it's something you'd be interested in.
we have groups for vegan runners so why not vegan footballers?

hi spyder,

could you resize your avatar please mate - its HUGE and pushes the whole content to the right :D

We can't properly control remotely linked avatars so thats why they may slide through...

somewhere around 115 x 125 pixels would be ok.

I really like the idea of it, although there may be some hefty travel for away games for us up in Scotland! The Brynderwen vegan community in Wales lists Football as one of their common interests. Always liked the idea of everyone having a meal, and then going out for a game (or the other way round!)

Bump!

Your not going insane this has to happen, any news? I think the best thing to do is just email all the groups listed and see if they like the idea, youl probably find most of them have a few members that kick about anyway.

A website would be kool, it would make the idea look more legit and not a pipe dream.

As long as you market it as a bit of fun, and not to serious we can get loads of takers.

Hey Spyder - this is still a great idea you know!

Arrange a meet-up - and see how many of us turn up! Try posting on other vegan boards to generate intrest, including the veganvillage notice board.

Website is also a great idea!

hey Spyder, sorry it's taken me ages to reply.

you've got some cool ideas there, we could book a hall fairly central and invite everybody (in the ways that have been suggested) !! and see what happens could be 3 a side  or a cup comp with 4/5/6 - 5 a side teams depending how many turn up.

we could arrange to get some food after to discuss with those that show up where we go with it in the future - National vegan football tour!! actually scrub that

VEGAN FOOTBALL WORLD TOUR!

well i can dream
