Tums- Vegan?

Postby TarekF » Thu Dec 17, 2009 6:24 pm

I am asking on behalf of my father who is a vegan (I am a vegetarian) whether Tums us calcium carbonate from bovine sources I.E. cows bones or some other source? He has terrible heartburn but is afraid that Tums may have animal products. I was under the impression that Tums used calcium that was mined from the earth, but im not sure.

Any help would be appreciated!

Also, any Tum-like products from a vegan company would also be appreciated.

Best way is always to contact the producer. Give them a call and I'm sure they'll be able to give you an answer straight away. Beats asking for speculations on an internet forum any day ;)

Limestone. Pharmaceutical grade limestone, to be precise.

What is the calcium source of TUMS and where does it come from?

TUMS varieties contain calcium carbonate USP. The calcium carbonate in TUMS is processed from pure limestone, resulting in a high degree of purity.

Does TUMS contain animal by-products?

TUMS does not contain animal by-products, with the exception of our E-X Sugar Free tablets, which have calcium stearate. Calcium stearate is used as a conditioning agent in certain food and pharmaceutical products and is derived from a bovine (cow) source.
