Good London places to eat

Postby Konstantin » Wed Aug 12, 2009 1:31 pm

I'm making a flying visit to London next week. I was thinking it would be a wasted opportunity if I didn't drop in at the vegan chinese in Acton that I used to requent many years ago. But I've heard it's now crap.

Is it? Are there other places people can recommend on the West/Central parts that are accessible by tube?

I'd personally recommend Beatroot on Berwick St, but then I'm biased cos I used to work there.

I also like the three vegetarian Indian places on Drummond St, just round the back of Euston Station. The food isn't spectacular, but it is cheap with fast service (esp at Ravi Shankars) and there's loads of vegan options.

There's also a really healthy place called 'Roots and Shoots', I think, on Drummond St that does salads and stuff.

EDIT: I've just remembered that it's called 'Greens and Beans' and it has a website: http://www.druworldwide.com/cafe/greens_and_beans

Camden Town had no veggie places when I lived there, but I'm told they now have two that have been highly recommended: 'Green Note' and 'Inspiral Lounge'. Haven't been to either but thought I'd mention 'em.

Go to Vitaorganic on Wardour street.

Edited: Just read you said west/central, so I won't recommend anything else :P

You used to work there hey? Cool, I went there and really liked it. They have amazing vegan sausage rolls...

Thanks everyone, I'll look into those. So is the vegan chinese crap these days?

I like the Tai Buffet in Islington (about 100metres from Angel Station on the High Street opposite). Loads of nice mock meats, cheap and you can eat as much as you like :) .

I love the idea of those cheap Chinese vegan places, but find I always get a headache if I eat there, presumably from all the MSG they use.

I ate at one of these a year or so ago and really would NOT recommend it. There was since a thread or two on here about their terrible food hygeine and that they pay less than the minimum wage. IIRC at least one of them has been closed by Environmental Health.

On a more positive note, I was really impressed with Inspiral Lounge in Camden, there was a great choice of food and drink and a really nice atmosphere.

My faves are inspiral in Camden - their tirimisu cake is my fave or the raw cheesecake.

Peking Palace is all vegan Chinese with buffet lunch and they dont use msg.

Love 222 - but further out.

I cannot stress enough to not go to any of those Tai buffets. They are awful on so many levels. 2 have recently been shut down by environmental health on rat infestation and other nasties. They use MSG, treat the staff like shit and the food is horrible.

There's a wonderful chinese run by the Supreme Master cult in Archway; Peking Palace. They have a buffet mid week at lunch or a la carte in the evening if you have more dosh.
http://www.thepekingpalace.com/ Great food, nice staff but weird cult tv channel on the box.

Tibits is my fave place in London; central, really friendly, nice decor, friendly staff, great service, eye candy.

Beetroot is great although a bit small. Avoid peak times and you'll get a seat.
92 Berwick Street,
Soho,
London,

Vita Organic has wonderful food but the service is crap and it's cramped.

Pogos is great http://www.pogocafe.co.uk/ although it's in Hackney so go with friends, preferably big friends with guns.

InSprial in Camden is great. http://www.inspiralled.net/index.php?op ... &Itemid=46

For cheap and cheerful it has to be the Indian Buffet. Nice food, crap service. It's covered in slogans and facts about the veggie diet. There's lots of pics on the walls of groups of Asian models who've eaten there. Sadly they've never been there when I've been in.

LOL. I'm living in Hackney at the moment, it's not THAT bad :)

Pogo's is awesome though. Not all that much variety but I could live off their burgers.

I also +1 the indian veg in Islington, the food is great.
