hemp flour vs hemp "protein"

Postby JP » Mon Feb 16, 2009 6:21 pm

help someone who doesnt understand...

Why not just use help flour as part of protein shakes?

Why would one buy so called hemp proteins?

Comparison:

hemp flour - about 3 pounds per 0.5kg, 25% protein.

hemp protein - 15 pounds per 0.5kg, 40-45% protein.

Am i missing something? Is hemp flour so vile it cant be used in shakes? (never tried myself) I can take vile, no problems, but is it somehow otherwise suboptimal?

I guess it makes sense if you don't want the extra energy?

When I was very poor I just used soya flour to make a shake.

It was actually quite nice.

Perhaps you could make some sort of Ships Biscuit from it?

Probably be good hard tack that.

Just like Biscuits, Brown from rat packs.

I've never thought about using hemp flour, I use hemp protein like crazy though. Maybe I'll give it a try. I wonder if the flour version is less textured.

I've never heard of hemp flour until now. How is it generally used (besides smoothies)? I'll have to keep my eye out for it the next time I'm at the health food store!

The back of the pack I have says to substitute half the flour in a recipe for hemp flower to put protein in your cooking/baking :)

Hey guys - I've been thinking about the hemp flour via hemp protein thing also so today I got some hemp flour to compare the 2

The hemp flours looks and tastes pretty much the same I recon - I should have my new hemp protein in the next day or two so will make a definate side by side & taste by taste comparison then but from memory I really can't see much difference :o

The nutritional values are slightly different - the flour had more fat but less carbs and protein - the protein has less fat but more carbs & protein.

I'm never realy sure how accurate these nutrition data things are tho tbh??

I'm going to try & see how hemp flour is made and how different the process is to making hemp protein itself - google here I come

yeah the extra fat is a good thing IMO - the fats have an ok omega 3 and 6 ratio.

But that all is useless if it is absolutely disgusting and undigestable

Using hemp flour might make the smoothie more chalky; I wouldn't be into that.

Honestly though, I've never been able to successfully put protein powders into a smoothie without it just tasting thick and gross. Maybe I'm using too much; I don't know. They are easier to bake with, I think. Hemp brownies (NOT pot brownies) taste like chocolate brownies and are super high in protein.

Did you get to do a comparison of the two? How does the hemp flour compare to the hemp protein in smoothies?

And does it taste less hempy? :D

The organic hemp powder is the only protein I've tried so far, and it tastes gross!

It just totally destroys the flavor of the other fruits I put into the smoothie, I think I'd prefer the less nourishing flour if it tasted better.

When adding hemp protein powder to my smoothies, I usually use half the recommended amount and then sub in either hemp seeds or a different kind of protein powder. It makes it WAY more palatable. Some mornings I don't mind the "grassy" taste and just dump in the whole amount of hemp protein though; depends on my mood. :P
