Another cycling related death, this time a vegan cyclist named Anthony Maynard:

(scroll down for the article)

I'm shocked by how many stories I've heard in the last year of cyclists dying in crashes with motorists.

very sad. the bbc news reported that the driver is on bail pending 'death by careless driving' charges, although i can't find a link to that.

Cycling in Britain is very dangerous !

Funny how this didn't make the news, like the mountain biker/pedestrian accident.

Doubtless the driver will get a small fine !

you only ever hear about these things in the cycling press or when another cyclist tells you. the wider media could not give a toss.

This brings it right home to us.

Tragic. Awful.

This is the reality of cycling in Britain.

Be careful out there !

That's tragic.

The tribute from the club secretary on the link from StevieP is very touching.

Condolences to family and friends.

This is horrible- penalties for dangerous driving need to be radically overhauled.

That is very sad news.

The tribute on the website was indeed very touching, he sounds like he was a lovely guy.

My upmost condolences.

Sentences etc. all depend on circumstances, mitigating factors, whether the driver was at fault in the first place, or if the driver was acting recklessly and flagrantly flouting the rules of the road. I think the press often focus on headline cases and distort the picture of reality.

Causing death by dangerous driving does carry a jail term of up to 14 years in the UK though. A driver can be charged with manslaughter in extreme cases too. I think these are weighty penalties.

Please don't assume this means I'm purely on the motorists side though. A very good friend of mine was killed by a speeding driver while crossing the road when I was at school. Something that I have never forgotten and always regret.

Education is key I think. A very good move I believe would be to make passing a cycling proficiency course followed by a period of experience cycling a requirement for getting a driving license. Also drivers need to remember that they are in control of a lethal weapon when they get behind the wheel.

Again condolences to Anthony's family and friends.

I am very saddened. Truly tragic. My sincere condolences to Anthony's family.
Such a loss.
Everyone else, please ride extra extra carefully out there, and drive more safely too.

i had a horrible feeling this might turn out to be someone we know.
my thoughts are with his family. another tragic loss. he seemed really nice.

ps. can an admin perhaps sticky this or link it from the general area? anthony wasn't on VF for long but i'm sure members who don't venture onto the cycling board would want to know.
