Double Bodyweight Squat in 2006 Challenge!

Postby drummer boy » Fri Dec 23, 2005 5:29 am

This is one of my main goals for 2006.

I have quite a long way to go as yet. I weighed myself today at 175 lb. So far, my best squatting session has been 6X205. I just started squatting regularly less than three months ago, though, so I feel like I've got a lot more in my legs.

I see that a lot of people on the board are somewhere in the vicinity of a double bodyweight squat. With a strong push, I think many of us could get there in a year's time.

Rules: Simple, must be a barbell squat of some type (e.g. Back Squat, Front Squat, Overhead Squat), with barbell set at shoulder height (low bar squats are OK). Squat must be to parallel or deeper. And the challenge ends on December 31, 2006.

I'll be in for it, and hope to make it in a few months. Mind you, with my recent weight increase I now have to hit over 540 lbs., but since I aim to knock down 525 in around 2 weeks I don't think it'll be long before I get there. Who else is in for this one?

sadly not going to happen for a very long time. maybe not even 4-5years, as by the time that i maybe do it i will weigh 130kg or so, and it would be a massive squat.

ill let you little light people fight this one out!!

Is this open to someone who does hack squats? Or are hack squats too easy?

If you do a barbell hack squat with double your body weight, I will be impressed :D. Not that I wouldn't be impressed by anyone doing a normal backsquat with double their bodyweight, of course ;).

I'm doing 11 reps with about 125 per cent of my bodyweight and I only started a few weeks ago. So, I just might manage it. If my grip doesn't let me down.

i thought it was gunna be 'double your bodyweight by doing squats' cos i heard somewhere squats was the best way to put all over muscle on.

I think we'll keep it open to any type of squat (as long as it's free weights, not machines!). I think hack squats will enable people with lower back issues to enter the competition. A double bodyweight hack squat is pretty impressive.

wax, if you double your current bodyweight through squatting this year, we'll surely come up with some kind of honorary prize to recognize your achievement! Although I think it might be easier to try to squat double your bodyweight!

Anyways, I'll go ahead and "modify" the title of this thread, since it seems to be causing so much confusion!

Well if it can be any type of barbell squat, perhaps I can get in on this. There are two types of squats that I might have a tough time doing double bodyweight, front squat and overhead squat. If I can hit a doublebodyweight overhead squat I'll declare myself a supreme champion, but what the heck, I may as well go for it! I've only gone up to 315 on front squats before, so I have some work cut out for me there as well.

So shove me on the list, bodyweight of 208lb, front squat starting weight of 315lbs and overhead squat weight of 185lb.

Today was my first official test of my squat 1 RM. It looked like this:

Back Squats
4X45
4X45
4X95
4X115
2X135
2X155
1X175
1X195
1X205
1X215
1X225
1X235
1X245*
FX255
1X225
6X155
6X135

* PR

Was pleased. I was hoping for at least 225, so I was happy to be able to get a bit more. The 235 and 245 both went up fairly solidly. I could have struggled a bit more with the 255 and gotten it, but I decided not to strain my back too much today, as I had already gone much heavier than I had ever gone before (my previous best weight was 6X205). I had strained my lower back just about a month ago, and didn't want to risk it again with the new year just beginning! My main goal today was just to get a number to base percentages off of for the next few months.

I did all of these without a belt, with 2:00 rest between each set (maybe slightly more after I reached 225, as I took a little more time to set myself up). It seems like my max strength is pretty solid, but my endurance is nonexistent! I've been getting thoroughly worn out doing reps at much lower weights than what I did today (in the 150-180 range). So it looks like some 20 rep sets would be in order. I think it will help at the top end, as my not getting 255 today felt like more of an endurance issue, having done so many reps at lower weights, than a power issue.

I've developed a general plan for the next four months or so, until my next 1 RM test:

5 weeks of 20 rep sets for endurance
5 weeks of pyramid sets with 5-6 reps, high volume (8-12 sets)
5 weeks of low volume workouts, heavy singles, doubles, and triples
another 1 RM test

If this works out, I'll repeat the cycle again.

My current bodyweight is 175, although I think that might go down some as the year progresses, as I've been stepping up my running a bit. I've lost a steady 2 lb./month over the last 3 months, while lifting at the same time. I think I have another 15-20 lb. of gut to lose without affecting my strength, but heavy squats will probably mean that I'll be putting on some muscle mass too, so we'll just have to wait and see how it all balances out. I think I'll end up somewhere in the mid-upper 160's when all is said and done at the end of the year.

As of today, however, double my bodyweight is 350, and I'm at 245 now. That means a 105 lb./48 kg increase in 2006.

Welcome, sensless. I think most Olympic lifters' front squat is somewhere between 80-90% of their back squat max, so that should be a realizable goal, with some work. If you get a double bodyweight overhead squat, then we'll be seeing you in the Olympics!

By my count, we are up to 6 participants so far: VeganEssentials, Daywalker, Gliondrach, JP, sensless, and I. I guess we should set up a table of some sort.

JP?

The Olympics would be a dream come true, but alas, I'm much too old and broken to even dream about that!

I have never maxed on a front squat before, so if it ends up I can front squat double bodyweight then I will let you know to just change me to the overhead squat attempt. The only time I attempted 315 I was having a bad day and had recently aggravated a knee injury, so I would imagine that I can do more than that. I'll let you know my true starting number next time I get to squat.
