Triathletes here???

Postby surfchic » Fri Sep 23, 2005 2:01 am

Hello

Since I'm new and don't know all the regulars I just thought I'd post a question about if there are any triathletes here.

I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has competed in one, is a current triathlete (as in regular training and competing in events) or anyone who is thinking of doing one.

I participated in a team tri about 4 years ago - did the swim leg, pretty slow but it was fun. Haven't done much with it since then but have just started my training for some events in the summer (I'm in Australia so that's coming up!) :)

Thanks in advance!

I've been thinking about doing one for a few months now. I am ok with the swim and cycle I think, but I can't seem to make headway with running. It is a lot harder for me to motivate myself to run since I enjoy the other two more, and I have lots of problems with shin splints. I guess the season is over around here, but I am hoping maybe to give it a try next spring.

Well I've committed myself to doing one in a year's time. I've done plenty of duathlons so biking & running no problem, but swimming - eek!

yeah, I'd love to do triathlons if you didn't have to run and swim

seriously, michaelhobson has a past in triathlons, even though I'm not sure he will admit it now when he's lifting with the big boys  are you there michael?

Hey cool. Thanks for the replies - had a bit of a giggle at the descriptions of your perfect tri - minus x, y, z or whatever - he, he.....

If I get serious about it all - I'll come back and post how I'm doing.....gotta get cracking if I want to do the December one, but should be ok for the March one.

Cheers,

it's been years, but i've done 3 sprint distance triathlons. sprint triathlons are classified as any that are shorter than the olympic distance (i think). olympic distance is 1.5k swim, 40k bike, 10k run.

they were a lot of fun. the atmosphere seemed a bit more fun than most of the running road races i've done.

i enjoyed the variety of training. i tried to practice each sport at least 3 times a week with a few days of two sports consecutively or at least in the same day. i did all 3 in one day a few times.

i did the first one with a friend who had a lot of swimming experience. he helped me and i gave him some tips on running. that was a big help! the thing i remember most was his advice to "swim like a fish." in other words, relax in the water and find a rhythm.

good luck and have fun.

i swim like a duracell fish apparently - with ease and relaxed and just go on forever at exaclty the same pace on and on and on!!!!!!!!!!!! same rythm, same easy rollling motion and everything - thats what people say to me anyway  it makes me laugh.

but the cycling and running bits would kill me... i dont do enoguh of either - dont have then fitness or endurance

Neil - ta for your input! Good to hear some real life stories to inspire me!

So Fruitbat what's your secret to your succes in swimming like a duracell fish (catchy tag!) Any tips?

Well, I must now admit here that I have totally sucked it up big time in the tri training over the past few weeks - v-e-r-y- slack, bad girl, bad girl! But I'm here to say that this is the week to get back into it - so I hope to post at the end of next week that I've stuck to it a bit more!

find a pace you are comfortable with and stick to it - get a relaxed rythm - dont wear yourself out in the first 10lengths...

I'm not one but my friend Brendan is www.brendanbrazier.com

I was a strong runner but I can barely swim a few meters. I did a dualathlon once. I won the running portion with my PR of 16:46 for a 5K (I know, not that fast) and my friend did the biking. He was passed and we finished 2nd overall, but it was really fun. :D

Check out Brendan's site, he's vegan and a professional Ironman triathlete.
