Rice protein?

Postby Trytter » Sun Mar 21, 2004 8:49 am

I´ve heard some vegans talk about rice protein shakes as an alternative to soy shakes. Strange thing is I´ve never seen anyone sell rice protein, not on the web or in any store?!
Anyone know why soy protein powders are so much more common?
Is it because soy powders taste better, or is it because of the protein quality?
If anyone has a link to a store selling rice protein I would appreciate if you would share it with me  .

In case I don´t see ya!
(forgot what he said next)

Soya protein is more common as it was originally developed as a basis for baby food, so it had a ready market to begin production. Rice protein is made by much fewer producers,so it is much more rare. I's a problem the hemp people have come across, they've decided to go a concentrate as there's just not the demand to set up a factory to produce Hemp protein isolate at the moment.
There have been rumours of a couple of rice protein factories closing within the last 12 months, hence rice protein has disappeared from a few suppliers. Whether this is true or just lack of sales I don't know. I wish we had rice protein in the UK, as it would be a useful addition to the proteins available for us to use.
There are some suppliers on my site here http://www.veganbodybuilding.org/supps.htm if you stumble across anymore, then let me know.

Is there going to be a hemp supplement soon in the UK? I know Yaoh were thinking of doing it, but I don't like to myther people too much! Is this the concentrate you mean? And if so do you mean it comes in liquid form? Presumably this would be less gritty than the soya isolate I have just struggled to get down my neck!

Thanks for the link.
Hemp protein? Sounds interesting.
Once more... How about a link to someone selling hemp protein? Or just some basic info on it, how complete it is etc, etc..
Thanks again!

Hi there.

I am a bit confused by the information that they put on the page about the Vegan protein powder. Here's what they say.

"Nutrisport
90+ VEGAN

Protein is an essential nutrient to the body. As well as aiding repairs to skin and body generally, it is vital for repair and growth of muscle tissue.

‘Bulking Up’ requires far more protein than most people can get from their normal diet. Supplementation is therefore required in addition to their normal meals. Protein drinks should be taken daily between normal meals. It is also advisable to increase carbohydrates when supplementing with protein as this helps with absorption, as well as providing energy resources.

90+ Protein is over 90% protein isolated from vegetables, has all the essential and nonessential amino acids and has been re-formulated with Micellar Casein. The combination of Micellar Casein and Whey ensure that you have a slow and prolonged release of protein into your body.
90+ is perfect for serious body builders, strength athletes and those on high protein diets."

Does this mean that the product is ninety percent vegan with 10 percent whey, or that they didn't bother writing a new blurb on the webpage? As I don't have a packet of the stuff in front of me I can't read the ingredients! Does anyone know? Cause I am confused... :? (again.)

Hi Mary. Only one of the 90+ range is vegan, the plain (you have to ask for the vegan version when ordering). The others contain animal bits & bobs, they are probably refering to that, but I'll check it out. I hope they haven't changed it to include animal stuff :x . I'll let you know when I get a reply (my old pack is 100% pea protein isolate just incase you're wondering).
Hemp, the hemp is a concentrate, that means that you don't just get protein (like an isolate), but also some carbs & fat. It is still in powder form. Because of problems with a supplier Tim (from Yaoh) wont be getting it until the end of the year now (that looks to be the earliest).
Here's the amino profile of one brand (I'd imagine they'd all be the about the same http://www.remyc.com/aminoacids_AH.html remember that it's only about 40% protein (+fat & carbs) instead of 70+ protein in an isolate, so you may need more to make your required protein intake.
Again, the link for Hemp protein can be found on the Supplement section of the Vegan Bodybuilding site http://www.veganbodybuilding.org/supps.htm

Mary, those two are different products, the 90+ VEGAN is vegan, and 90+ rotein is the whey based protein isolate.

It appears that nutrisport put up the wrong webpage for their Vegan 90% + powder here's the mail:

Nutrisport said:

Hi Pete

Yes, our description on the site is incorrect.

"90+ Protein is over 90% protein isolated from vegetables has all the
essential and nonessential amino acids and has been re-formulated with
Micellar Casein. The combination of Micellar Casein and Whey ensure that
you have a slow and prolonged release of protein into your body."

Thank you for pointing this out to us. The 90+ Vegan does not contain
any Whey or Micellar Casein. Somehow when setting up the site: some of
the 90+ description got mixed into the 90+ Vegan description by
accident.

This will be corrected by tomorrow.

Thanks again and sorry for the confusion.

Kind regards
Neil Raynor

yes.

The holland and barret is like sweet nectar from gods garden compared to the pea protein poison.

But after a while you get used to it and soon you get cravings for it

I have a feeling that I now know why some say that 0.8g protein/kg is more than enough even for athletes :P .
Considering the alternatives..

I use this:
http://www.nutribiotic.com/riceprotein.htm

They sell it at Vitaminshoppe.com, and ship internationally . . . I'm sure the shipping has got to be pricey. Fortunately for me, they sell it at the natural food store near my house! :D

I thought Protein Factory had a rice protein, but I am not finding it on their website now.
