Freezing Juice in Aseptic Package

Postby jamesndawson » Wed Jul 11, 2012 1:44 pm

Is it okay to freeze juice in aseptic containers? There's a heatwave here, and I'd like to bring some with me to work to drink for lunch, and have it cold. I'm an outdoor worker.

Sounds like a good idea. Why wouldn't it be ok?

When the juice freezes it will expand, which might burst the container.
I'm not if this will happen, it will probably depend on the type of container and whether there is much space in it to allow expansion. You could try it out anyway, and see what happens. But worth checking if the container is burst before it melts.

Thanks vClaW. I'll follow your advice.

Talyn, I've read freezing food in some plastic bags causes the food to absorb bad chemicals, like pthalates. I don't know if this is pseudo-science or not, I'm not an expert on the distinction. Some scientific claims and pseudo-scientific claims seem to overlap, and I don't have it all sorted out yet. I just ask questions to get different opinions and try to make my best judgement.

Probably better using a plastic PET type bottle, and yeah don't fill it up all the way. I used to do this all the time when I lived somewhere much warmer than were I live today.

True, but at least you wouldn't be thirsty.
