Nutritional Yeast

Postby Anton » Mon May 14, 2012 11:40 pm

sooooo...i had never heard of this stuff. then i was reading about it, and was amazed by the protein content..is, like, 50percent!!

http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/custom/1323565/2

is this a viable source for upping protein and bulking up? or is it just for flavoring? like I said, i have never tried the stuff.....

It's nice enough. It's used in a lot of "cheese" recipes as it has a sort of savoury umami flavour that is not unlike a very mild parmesan. I used to use it in my pre-vegan days, if that's any vouch of it's quality.

I think the main problem with it is that you'd need to eat a hell of a lot to get any substantial amount of protein. Chuck a tablespoon over your pasta for a bit of extra protein. I wouldn't sit and eat it by the spoonful, though.

Edit: I've just noticed you're from Brighton (I grew up in Lewes) and you can almost certainly get in in Infinity Foods.

It should be £2-£3 for a tub. The Engevita one with added B12 (blue and orange tub) tastes like assbutts, but their other one (grey and orange tub) is nice. Maybe I had a bad batch of the B12 stuff, but it tasted unpleasantly like vitamin B tablets.

(Edited for stupid grammatical error.)

I get the engevita one (the blue one with added b12)... it is great. I eat around 20-30g a day, usually by mixing it into salads.

It's a nice little protein boost too, with a small 10g serving giving 5g protein.

If you don't like the taste of it, there is something wrong with you.

I use it to make a rudimentary Cheese style sauce by stirring it into some soy milk and then adding cornflour to thicken. Wouldn't Eat it on its own mind.

I really, really like nutritional yeast cheese sauces. I don't think they taste like cheese at all, but they are delicious all the same. I also like to sprinkle nutritional yeast over salads. The kind I buy is also fortified with B-12.

I couldn't personally eat it by the spoonful by itself, but I chuck a heap of it in my lasagnes, spaghetti and some dips as well. It's pretty tasty, but my dh complains that it gives him the runs :?

I love nooch (nutritional yeast). Great on toast with nuttelex and baked for a tasty snack.

I put it in sietan and burgers and things like that. It doesn't make a huge differences to the protein content but if you can get some more in there then why not
