Do you guys not know that all race threads require a constant stream of trash talking pictures?

Deadlift to 180 kg is over...

Postby Orkje » Thu Feb 23, 2012 5:24 pm

I don't know what came over me today, but here it goes: my previous deadlift PB was 135. When training with lighter weights, I did notice that I seem to favour the sumo style deadlift, probably because of my long legs. Anyway, today I was supposed to just do a 5x10x80 deadlift set after my 5/3/1 session, but then I remembered this race...
I don't own enough suitable plates to get to 180, so I started taping weights that don't fit my barbell to the other plates. I've also got some ankle/wrist weights lying around and they were needed to make up the total. Also, the plates rest on wooden supports because I don't own any 450mm diameter plates and hey, that is the official height, isn't it? The centre of the barbell is now exactly 22cm off the ground. Talk about a ghetto setup... I'm not doing this sort of thing again. Time to spend some money on equipment.

Here it is then, in all its ugly glory (rounded back, oh yes):

Oh, and my back muscles hurt, but it's supposed to be like that, eh?

that's an amazing pull!

however ... I'm going to have to be the bad guy here. :(

bad news

The stuff on the side is unfortunately functioning like chains would so that it's not 180kg of resistance the whole way up.

How much is it without those leg weights? Is there a way that you could attach them so that they provide the same resistance all the way up? Maybe tape them to the plates?

good news

height to the center of the bar should be about 19.8cm, i'm guessing you were measuring from the top of the bar so green light for bar height.

how much is it without the ankle weights?

edited to add: my function for the race is purely administrative so I'll defer to the majority opinion on this. Also maybe i'm wrong about how the ankle weights are functioning.

Okay Lordmuppet, thanks for dotting the i's

Well, I tried to measure the centre of the bar but by the time I tried the 180, the supports had already caved in somewhat. Bar height should indeed be okay.

The ankle weight then: actually, all of them were snugly wrapped around the smaller plates, but the one turned towards the camera slipped towards the side after lift-off. I'm lucky it didn't come all the way off. It certainly didn't function like a chain.

You may also see something dangling somewhat further to the back: those are actually plates duck-taped to the underside of the bar, in between my hands.

Phew. All good?

thanks for taking the criticism in good spirit :)

Glad to hear about the ankle weights! So just to be clear: once you started pulling the ankle weights no longer touched the crates/floor or never touched the crates/floor? That's what i meant by 'functioning like chains'.

If they didn't function like chains in this way then I'm happy to recant and give it a white light from me :)

Oh and yeah get some olympic plates! ;)

Assuming no one else has any objections to Orkje's 180kg lift, that will mean that as per the rules ...

"As with other race once someone hits 180kg, everyone else has exactly one week to also lift 180kg and tie the race."

Myself, I'm unfortunately in no condition to try to add 15kg to my PR as a result of some lost weight and a shoulder injury. Lifted 100kg the other day and it felt like 140kg. :(

edited to add: watching the video again I don't think the lower back is baldy rounded at all considering it is a PR. All PRs have bad form by definition. If they had better form they wouldn't be real PRs as there would be more in the tank.

Indeed: they did not touch the floor at the moment of lift-off as they were wrapped around the smaller plates.

Thanks. And indeed: I had nothing left. It's actually quite amazing how fast the pull is on video. While doing it, it felt like ages. I'm wondering what it must feel like for certain lifts you sometimes see that actually look slow as well.

hehe that is a ghetto set up :D love it! Welldone!

but even one inch lift off help from the ground does make a diffenence, especially sumo stance. Nevertheless, 180 is in the bag for you, but would be good to get it nailed in normal set up too soon :D

and then 200...

Could I enter as some kind of a side competitor?
I pulled 205 in November but lost 5-7 kg and am back to 170 kg (on a good day, absolute maximum), so I could use some extra motivation to get back up as soon as possible.

Aaand I just noticed that the race will be finished in a week :D
A little late to enter ;)
