Hi everyone!

Hi everyone ;-)
I've been vegan for about 8 years (with a couple of vegetarian stints in there due to pressure from doctors whilst pregnant and also just generally falling off the wagon)
I am vegan for ethical and environmental reasons. But I am quite unhealthy. I would like to turn my diet and physical habits around to work for my health. I have 3 children and I'm 26 and I feel much older. I want to have a life when I am old and I want to do more things with my kids and be a better example to them. I want to look good and love myself and put my health first! I am here because I need your help! Trying things alone is not working......

My diet is pretty healthy most of the time but I find that I tend to binge a bit and also have a massive sweet tooth. My husband eats a lot of unhealthy stuff and I think I let him influence me (not that I'm trying to shift the blame, it's my body my choice) I tend to have good intentions but end up a bit all over the place. I have a big interest in raw food diet but find it hard to sustain due to financial constraints and my inability to get to the shops when I need to.

My biggest problem is most definitely my fitness. It is zero! I have gotten into some very lazy habits again probably due to having young children, no drivers license, not much to do at home except look after the kids. I also am a student so a lot of my time is taken up at uni or studying. I don't really have a lot of time to exercise or a means to go anywhere, and if I did it is so hard to do anything with 3 kids in tow so why bother? I have tried getting up early, before the kids do. They hear me and come out and ruin my workout. At night after they go to bed all I want to do is collapse on the couch with exhaustion and struggle so find some "me" time. I know this sounds like a pile of excuses, but that's why I'm here because I want to change!!
I would love some suggestions of how to get out of my exercise rut!!

Also any tips on what exercises I could start with that are cheap, no equipment, etc. I bought myself a 2nd hand bike recently but find it so hard to ride - I get such a sore bottom from the seat! I know I need to stand up right? well my balance is not too flash but I will give it a whirl! Any other ideas? I really would like to do a boot camp or join some kind of group that does simple body weight exercises outdoors preferably. Would love to do yoga but the classes in my area are so expensive. (I apologise if I sound a bit whingey about the expense of things. It's just that we are in a very tight spot financially at the moment and it is a major thing I have to consider in every action of our lives, hopefully this will change soon!)

Anyways that's me^ lookin forward to meeting you all and getting fit :-)

Welcome!

Motivating yourself to do exercise can be tough when you haven't done it for a while. I find team sports or group exercises the best as you have other people with you to encourage you and there is a social aspect too!

If money is a problem you could buy a good pilates or yoga dvd to do at home. Just make sure you follow the advice on technique as it's important. Or you could do a couple of classes to get technique sussed and see if it is for you then do at home with DVD.

The other suggestions is walking building up to jogging. You just need a decent pair of shoes.

There are a lot of exercises you can do at home with your own body weight (or with things you find around the house like water bottles for weights). Squats and lunges are a good start (again watch technique!) Pop on some up beat fast paced music to get you in the mood!

Good luck!

Welcome.
I do think cycling can be good exercise, plus a useful way of getting around. If the bike is not comfortable or you, it is worth trying a different saddle. You don't need to spend much, maybe borrow one or get one second hand to try out. Also, wearing padded shorts will probably help.

hello, thanks for the warm welcome and all the tips :D

I think I need a social aspect, that's part of why I joined this site actually! so I can "be around" people who exercise and who knows maybe something will rub off on me  I wonder is there any challenges I can join on here for motivation?

Though I will continue to research fitness groups locally and see what's available.

I am from Tasmania, Australia by the way! oops forgot to put that in my intro..

I have discovered bodyrock.tv, I would like to give that a go because it's free and not much equipment needed. Anyone else do their videos? Every time I have tried it has totally knackered me, I mean I have not been able to do half the workout. But at the same time I'm not sure if I'm pushing myself hard enough. Wish I had someone to help me push myself!

I think I willl try walking/jogging.

I've been thinking maybe I could somehow attach some padding to my bike seat... like tie on a towel somehow or something. would look a bit weird but I imagine it would just be temporary.

Hello & Welcome from another vegan parent of 3! :D

Are your kids vegan as well? All of mine are - since as early as you consider life to begin!

Mine aren't I'm afraid. I hope I wont be hated too much for this fact... My husband is omni so our kids are too, but they eat mostly vegetarian at home. Funny you should bring this up because tonight I was reading my daughter a bedtime story, a chapter from Charlotte's Web, we got talking about farm animals and she told me that she wanted to be a vegetarian. I feel so proud that she has made this choice on her own. It is what my husband and I decided that I basically would be truthful about my reasons for being a vegan and if my kids expressed a wish to be a vegetarian or vegan then we would encourage this choice. It is a hard topic to discuss with children, my little girl (who is 6) was almost in tears while we were talking and said that she wished the animals could just "be free". I don't like to go into too much detail out of fear of upsetting her but at the same time be truthful and let her know that animals get hurt and killed because people want to eat them. We haven't spoken of the vegan issues yet, but I don't want to bring it up because I wonder if the dairy industry is too complex a topic for a 6 yr old and I don't want to be pushing her into it or something. Not that I think that bringing your children up vegan is pushy at all. I think it is very exceptional. We are custodians of small people and it is our responsibility to raise them to be ethical caring human beings. I suppose it is hard because very few people in my family are supportive of my vegan ideals. They are quite happy for me to be vegan, but if I was to raise my children vegan it would be a very different story. I don't even think my husband would be supportive. He has said that our family can go vegan but I know he wouldn't stop eating cheeseburgers from the McDeath or commit to it properly because he doesn't share my passion about animal cruelty. Anyway... It is lovely to meet another vegan mummy! How do you factor exercise in with 3 kids?

Put some techno on and jump around with your kids. I did this with some toddlers while babysitting and they loved it. We were all knackered at the end of the evening, in a good way.

Exercise doesn't have to be some separate activity; it can be incorporated into your daily routine, e.g. by walking instead of getting the bus, walking up escalators instead of standing, carrying your shopping in a rucksac on your back ...etc.

Welcome :D
I think that walking and running is good and cheap and it's a great way to start a fitness habit without spending a lot of money. All you have to do is buy running shoes and if you suck at running or walking you can just wear the shoes around town.

I would also think about making fitness fun. Or maybe used the second hand bike to run errands. Not sure where you live but if you live in an urban area you can start to use the bike to get around town and and get exercise in at the same time

Again welcome to the board :D

I used to be a bodyrocker but it's changed so much recently, too much knee damaging impact moves now and the people running things seem so fake. Now I do my own mix of intervals, heavy low rep / light high rep stuff and am making very good progress.
