VF lifting meet? (in Scotland or maybe UK wide)

Postby Lordmuppet » Fri Jan 20, 2012 1:19 pm

So was chatting with chewybaws about powerlifting meets and I couldn't think of a good reason why we don't have our own lifting meet (wouldn't need to be limited to the power lifts we could do whatever we want e.g. also add in olympic for those that want it and maybe some random fun strongman events). Good idea is to make all events optional.

I tried running one of these with four non vegan friends once and got a sense of logistical issues (four guys and one rack = all bloody day). Some of you have been involved in running actual meets so you will have a much better idea of what is needed

Anyway there are 'only' three issues as I see it

1) people number: too few and it isn't really worth it. Any decent number and venue and equipment become a serious logistical issue.

2) venue and equipment: like i said even with just four people we would need at least two lifting areas I think

3) travel: how far are people willing to travel?

Anyway let me know if you are interested and if you have any suggestions/criticism

Good idea.

I reckon either Manchester or Liverpool would be good, as they are both fairly central. I'd be happy to travel anywhere in the UK though, provided there was enough notice.

Perhaps OSG as a venue?

yep Manchester was my thought for UK wide and hey might as well do UK ride. We Scots folk could travel down together. It would be fun! :)

What is in Liverpool?

Dare I suggest a push pull event? With deadlift anf floor to overhead event.
You would need to use some kind of wilks system to do the ranking or just make everyone a winner.

I am keen, schedule is however chockers and vacation days limited. A weekend away would be awesome, maybe in the Midlands?

You're already a winner baldy, you unique snowflake you ;)

edited to add: that sort of push pull would be good as it is only two events (good logistically) and there is something for everyone there I think.

If it's a push/pull wouldn't it be bench/deadlift? Or are you now too lemony fresh to bench?

edit: overhead press & deadlift would be fine

agreed. OHP works better than floor-to-head as everyone can do it.

"lemony fresh"? I'm behind on the lingo. Does this refer to olympic folks?

Yeah was thinking deadlift and floor to overhead.
BUT cheeky for me to suggest it as both are my banker events :)

Can be tweaked, using axle, allowing straps or doing bench. If people are going to watch then bench is boring anyway (even if people aren't watching bench is boring), bench is boring.

People can press more than they can clean  These people should be banned!

Lifting weights can be disco, but never metro.

Generally true, but lemony lifters get special dispensation.

It says so in the IWF handbook.

Deadlift and floor to overhead sounds like a good combination...and Manchester sounds like a good venue...lots of good eating to be done in Manchester...we could go to Lilys after lifting (great Indian veg food near OSG)... 8)
