Are American Pommegranates Vegan?

In the United States the only pomegranates available seem to be those grown by POM Wonderful, the same company doing testing on animals to verify their health claims for their expensive pomegranate juice.

So, an American consumer gives money to a company that tests on animals every time they buy a pomegranate.

Are pomegranates, the ones grown by POM Wonderful, therefore vegan?

I heard they stopped testing in 2007. Also, the pomegranates themselves are vegan, just as french fries at Burger King are vegan, and an iced tea at Starbucks is vegan. Just because a company tests on animals or uses animal products in some of their products, doesn't mean that other products they sell are inherently vegan. If we never bought from companies who EVER tested on animals or used animal products, well, we wouldn't leave the house. Tires are often not vegan, 'natural ingredients' are often not vegan, floss is often not vegan, etc. Plenty of things we consume may or may not be vegan, but the challenge of removing those products from our lives is more costly to our well-being than the benefit gained from that removal. Can I even find vegan tires? Who knows! But I need tires, so I buy them and accept that cost as part of the moral price I must pay to be a functioning member of this society. You do your best and life goes on....

The studies were on pomegranate juice (very expensive) AND paid for BY POM, but it showed that a tall glass of pomegranate juice a day slowed the growth of prostate cancer tumors.

I had one like 5 years ago because a Palestinian guy I worked with said they were good. It was terrible. Way too much work as well. I'm not sure anything tastes good enough to warrant the effort it takes to get to those disgustingly sweet seeds.

1. fill a big bowl with cold water
2. slice the pomegranate in half
3. twist a piece off of one of the halves
4. brush the kernels off with your finger, letting them drop into the water
5. repeat until all done

The kernels will sink to the bottom of the cold water, the nasty pieces of rind will float to the top allowing you to skim them off the surface.

You will get a LOT of fruity kernels for a few minutes of work. Put them in a plastic bag in your fridge or freeze them.

I love pomegranates. I ate them a lot growing up in Chile. Yummy.
I was glad to be able to find a few available in the US.

I find nothing wrong eating pomegranates. My veganism is about a consumer boycott. I can still oppose animal testing and POM's policies and still eat pomegranates, whether by POM or by someone else.

I also live in the US, which is part of the continent of America. America, however, isn't the same as the USA. I was always an "American" citizen, but only recently as US citizen. Different things. No need to extend US borders farther than they actually go.

I don't buy meat.

POM's pomegranate juice which POM did animal testing to sell comes from the fruit they grow in the U.S..
