Bittman: Go 'semi-vegan'

Postby Fallen_Horse » Fri Dec 30, 2011 6:52 pm

I wonder about his strategy. Vegan once-a-week? Sounds pretty dang lazy to me. I think he is a believer in 'slow and steady wins the race' and he is attempting to simply introduce people to vegan meals, but at the same time, if you are reading his books and articles, you are probably half vegan already! Not sure if I like his influences or not...

Bearing in mind that the vast majority of folks will not even CONSIDER full time veganism, I don't think his strategy is necessarily a bad thing. If folks actually *did* cut out animal products once a week and not compensate the next day, that would equal a 14% reduction in consumption. Nothing to sneeze at, that.

If it was only 12% would vegans in ski mask hats and bull horns line up outside of their homes to collectively sneeze on their lawns? :).

I agree, 1/2, 1/3, whatever is better than zero.

1/2,1/3 of people being part time vegans would also mean the mainstreaming of more vegan options which would make it more likely that other people may pick up a vegan diet.
That decision becomes easier to make......and keep( fewer vociferous ex-vegans ) if you see that more *readily available* than tofu, peanut butter and oatmeal.

Maybe, if lots of people do this, some of them will go vegan after finding out how easy it really is to make meals without animal products.
