Ah you don't understand the Whillans philosophy.

Socks cause frostbite. No argument would change his mind. Socks cause frostbite. Always have, always will, no matter what you make them from.

He also used to ride his motorbike without socks.

There are many stories about Don but my favourite is when he restocked an intermediate camp from a higher camp!!! "Noboby expected Don to do carries but this is bloody ridiculous" was the comment.

Love it.

Think Don's response was to dob him! (usually was).

So just remember ...

Socks cause frostbite.

(He also wore pyjama bottoms during long walk ins)

Actually, I may have found something for you - socks consisting of an inner liner, VB layer and an outer layer all bonded into one. I can't find any mention of wool, seems to be a polyester/polypropylene thing. The company is a small one so they'd likely be happy to answer questions.

Rave review from Hull's second best climber here

I've written quite a bit about looking after feet (including sweaty feet) in the field here, some of which may be less than irrelevant and not incorrect.

Thanks for the link to the socks, going to try a pair. Also a great post you did about feet. Lots of good info there, most I knew but good to see it all in one place and to remind me.

But remember now, socks cause frostbite!

cowers in fear lest Il Duce turn out to be a closet dobber...

Please let us know how you get on with those socks too. They do sound the business, and fairly cheap at the price too, bound to be a catch somewhere!

Hey!

Is anyone of you climbers coming to the Vegan Fitness Week 2010 in August? The place is in Siebel, South Germany near Switzerland border. I looked from the map and got info from my Finnish friend that there are plenty of good rocks nearby. Also, there should be one of Europe's biggest indoor gyms somewhere near.

I do mostly sport climbing for moment, but as spring and summer come I'm going to train traditional climbing as well.

At the moment there aren't participating any other climbers besides me, so if I would get at least one other climber there, things would be much better! :)

Wow that sounds like an amazing event & I would of gone, but I'm away in OZ for a year. I hope you get a few people over to join you.

Ps what is the bouldering like in Finland? I would love to visit at some point.

Hey chriss!

What a pity you can't come, but feel welcome to Finland instead! :)

I hope this gives you some useful information: http://www.slouppi.net/allAreas.phtml
Summer is great time visit Finland because sun sets only for short time, and especially in the North days are nightless.

Hey chriss, it's good to have you back...I've not climbed much over the last 3 years (since I fractured a couple of vertebrae after decking out in the Anti-Atlas) but I plan to get back into climbing in 2012...no high ball bouldering for me ever again but I want to get back into single and multi-pitch trad... 8)

Ouch! Glad your on the come back!

This year has been a real yo yo year for me in every aspect. Hit some climbing pb's, but ultimately no consistency.

Injury has really scuppered me. Bad elbows, bad knees- wow someone break out the violin!
