VFW Tuscany is definitely on my wish list and is my highest priority trip. That said I really don't know yet and even if I can make it work it will be the most expensive trip I have ever taken. Things are looking kind of shaky for my employer too and they just announced some job cuts at my worksite. I seem to be ok right now but who knows?

So all of the places I listed are just daydreams at the moment...

What about you JP? I don't see your name on the list for the 2012 VFW at all...

Back to the top! I am still looking for folks to visit with when I travel, traveling folks to come visit me and even folks that want to travel with me. As things stand, I am most likely to visit places in the western provinces and states of Canada and the US but please get in touch regardless of where you are!

I would happy accomodate you - I live in Aberdeen Scotland though so not Canada or US but if you ever felt the need to come to Aberdeen then I have a spare room Currently in the process of investigating Portland area and such like to do my I'll be brave holiday so I'll happy travel about with you..it'd be great being with another vegan Have you travel plans already this year??

I don't have a spare room but I do have a spare couch or futon available. I have a number of travel plans but they are pretty flexible & you'd be welcome to join in. My bigger plans include a trip up to British Columbia in May and a possible trip over to the big Rainbow Gathering in Montana in June/July.

Also, Seattle has a Veg Fest next month, the Victoria Vegan Fest is in July, Vancouver will likely be in July or August & Portland (aka the best one!) is in September!

Good to know! I'm not sure what the next few months will bring, but my birthday is in September and I've always wanted to come visit Portland so if I can find a way out there, I'd love to come.

What's caught your interest in Portland/Cascadia so far?

I quite like the outdoors so hiking would be cool although I have the issue that I don't really drive...I can but passed my test so long ago and on the other side of the road that I might be a danger to myself and others I'm not sure if the places I could access could be done without my own wheels And of course a look around Portland itself...One of my fav holidays was 3 weeks to get from Denver to San Fran through lots of National Parks. I did some driving back then

I'm the kind of person that quite easily tags along if that makes sense...I just like to see new places Maybe there is guided hikes that take you out into the wilderness...I really need to do lots more research

Even in the cities here in Cascadia, there are some fairly natural areas that offer good hiking options. Forest Park in Portland has over 80 miles of trails, including the Wildwood Trail which is 30+ miles one way by itself! Most of these trails are easy to get to by bus or light rail train- this place is further out but you can literally walk off the train, cross over the tracks & walk into the nature park! http://www.thprd.org/nature/naturalarea ... repark.cfm

Perhaps most uniquely Portland - the 4T trail, which fully integrates 3 seperate forms of public transit: tram (aerial!), trolley (streetcar / tram) & train (light rail) with a trail that winds between natural areas & neighborhoods. Not the longest, wildest, etc but quite nice!

Of course once you get out of the cities you have a very wide range of hiking options - including many in protected wilderness areas, old growth (*never* logged) forests - and quite a few of these can be accessed using public transit! Just outside of Portland the Columbia Gorge & Mt. Hood offer many excellent options. Crater Lake, North Cascades & Olympic National Parks are all awesome!

That said, having a car definitely opens up your options. With advance notice, I'd be happy to rent a car and do a road trip with you. Playing tour guide is one of my favorite things to do - maybe we could even get a little VF crew together!

The Columbia Gorge is one of the prettiest places in the Northwest. If you're in the area though, going north to the Olympic Peninsula is a must. There is quite literally nothing like the Olympic National Park.

Also, in Portland, don't forget about the beer!
