anyone experiencing bursitis?

Postby marina.levai » Thu Sep 29, 2011 10:10 pm

hello
could anyone help me with this? i really need some advice...

about 6 or 7 months ago i injuried my right shoulder when falling off a kayak. it hurt a lot at the moment, but since i could move my arm and shoulder properly i assumed nothing was harmed.
but since then i've been having a bit of pain on that shoulder; it used to be no more than once a week, but now it's getting more frequent and it's lasting longer. i suspect the injury made me develop bursitis.
i've been doing weight training since long before the injury; in fact i have reduced the frequency of my regular weight sessions since last month and been focusing on bench press trainings cause i'll be competing on a bench press tournament in 10 days. i know that's probably why my shoulder pain has got worse, but i already singned up and i really really want to compete. i'm planning to stick to the training and compete not worrying about my shoulder, then after that i'll take a break from all upper body weight training and let it heal. am i being too irresponsible? the pain hasn't got to a critical level so i'm sort of ignoring it (at least until after the competition) but it does bother me and i really don't want it to get to a more severe point.

in fact i'm not being THAT irresponsible, i've been taking days off a lot more frequently than before, hoping the pain will go away, yet my shoulder is not getting any better. any advices? i don't wanna go to the doctor or take painkillers.
and PLEASE don't tell me not to compete. lol
i just wanna know how bad it can get and make sure i'll take a break before it gets to that point.

Tempted to say pull out and rest, but if you're determined that won't be useful I guess. If you are doing weights, make sure you avoid lifts that involve shoulder flexion/extension at maximum internal/external rotation; upright rows are the main culprit, with behind the neck press/pulldowns also guilty.

Good luck either way!

I've had quite a lot of trouble with my shoulders in the past (two fractures and one open surgery), and I'd definitely say that the shoulders are too complicated and important not to seek professional advice. Seeing a physical therapist is probably a better idea than a doctor at this point I'd guess.

common injury among people in my sport - so many ways to treat and recover from it (if it is that!) but best is to kick start the recovery by visiting a physio or sports injury specialist or something like that.

if it is that, you have a lot of options but the guru will let you know how to start it off (unfortunately one of the advices is to keep coming back to them, which is the one i usually dont follow...)
