Interesting information. It seems to be to the advantage of the race organizer to make the course as short as possible. And if the ITU is allowing it, why not?

Yeah... pretty sloppy really - I've recorded some "great" times in triathlon run legs, being fully aware that they are not the distance it says on the tin!

In comparison, I'm currently getting a course remeasured for a running race I'm director for. I asked yesterday what the tolerance was and found out it was 1% ... that's a lot better

Frankly, I prefer runs that are really short in a triathlon. But even more so, I'd like runs and swims that are marked correctly. I would prefer a race that had a 1.5k swim, a 20k bike, and a 3k run (rather than a 5k run), but almost all the races I do make the swim MUCH shorter, and keep the rest of the race somewhat to what is posted. I HATE having a shorter swim.

Most of my swims are notoriously short. I don't know how often I get PB's in open water triathlons where I feel like garbage, only to swim "better" in open water races measured by actual Masters and Open water specialists and I get a "normal" time.

Haha I did the UK IM this year and I had no idea that this was the case last year...although it sure felt a lot longer than 3.8k this year lol.

The problem this time around was that the marathon was short. It is so demoralising to finish the race and then be told that your marathon was actually a few km short!

ha ha, that's hilarious. that's what happens when you constantly fiddle with non-metric units, it all becomes a jumble of furlongs, roods, bushels, miles, and inches.
