Trader Joes Soy Protein Powder

Postby VexedCoffee » Fri Sep 02, 2011 12:04 am

I went to trader joes for the first time last week and saw that they had soy protein powder really cheap. I, rather excited about it bought some on the spot. After my workout today I followed the directions and mixed two scoops with 8oz of water.

It was suppose to be vanilla flavored but the only way I can describe it is it was like trying to drink wet flour. I couldn't even drink the 8 oz. So what gives? Is there a way to prepare this so it is drinkable? Is this normal for protein powders?

When i lived in the US I got my protein powders at http://www.trueprotein.com. Buy a years supply and save yourself some cash.

Myself I don't really use soy protein powder as i have enough soy anyway in my diet! Have a look at hemp, brown rice, pea powders.

And yeah i blend with fruit, cocoa and other stuff to make it all nice :)

ice and soy yogurt (see it turns up everywhere!) make it nice too!

Mix it with soy milk, not water. ALL protein powders taste vile mixed with water. TJ's vanilla is pretty tasty that way, even better if you blend it with a bit of peanut butter in there.

Nesquick works well,

or a spoon of good instant coffee,

or HTFU, hold your nose and chug it.

Mixing it with a milk such as soya or a nut milk can help make it more creamier and better tasting.

But ill say if your having trouble with soya protein for taste i dont think you'll like hemp or pea protein as there even worse.

There are good tasting vegan proteins, check another brand of soya protein(most of them are pretty good tasting ive found although i cant remember the brands as its been a while). Sunwarrior raw protein and vega sports protein are good but abit more expensive than soya.

I see where the confusion is coming from! Many powders are 'vanilla flavored', which simply means that vanilla extract has been added. This has NOTHING to do with the sweetness of the product, unlike in yogurts, soy milks, etc. With powder, you have to check the ingredients list to see if they have added sugar or sweetener to the product. That's the only way it will be sweetened on it's own. The term 'vanilla flavored' in protein powders isn't descriptive enough, since it only indicates that they added vanilla flavoring, not sweetener.
Lovin' it!
