Revolt - I think ultra running is still new enough that it's almost always a shot in the dark. And the trail races that run through the mountains...I can't even imagine how that works unless you live and train in the mountains. I guess I would just try to go into the race with no or low performance expectations. I'm not one to ease into something, so I'll probably jump in like you are.
As far as my mileage/prep goes, I'll probably follow a similar schedule to what I did for the last several marathons. Below is a link to my training log from Boston 2010 - I ran 2:41 for that race.

A typical week is intervals on Tuesday, tempo on Thursday, long run on Sunday, and recovery pace miles for all the rest.
