The girl with the hummingbird tattoo

Postby Rochellita » Sat Jun 11, 2011 6:48 pm

After a long period of indecision I finally stepped up to the mat and started taking MMA (mainly grappling) lessons this week. The decision, which I haven't take lightly because it takes a certain amount of courage and commitment to do start a crazy martial art at age 40, was triggered by local fighter Rosi Sexton starting women's only MMA classes in Liverpool. So, not knowing what to expect and knowing nobody at the gym, I made the hour long train trip to Liverpool in search of Next Generation MMAand hoped for the best.

The gym itself was initially quite unwelcoming with a group of teenage fighters just chatting amongst themselves about dieting down for theie next fights when I walked in. I was relieved when later another woman turned up and we hit it off immediately which relaxed me somewhat. Rosi didn't actually make the session due to some problems with childcare so one of the local lads took the session. It was fine. We were led to a cage and started grappling, I've had one lesson in BJJ at a veganfitness week in Australian a few years ago so this was really baptism by fire. It wasn't terribly structured but as it was unplanned I was ok with what we did. The best thing that came out of the session is that I met another woman doing it, even though she has been doing jujitsu for a decade or so. It turns out there is a really good MMA gym 5 minutes from my flat, and my new found training partner's girlfriend teaches there on Saturday's, no-GI grappling and stand-up MMA, so I decided to go along today and get a feel for the teacher, the gym and the training.

So today I headed over to Fighting Fit Martial Arts Centre, which turned out to be an excellent gym, properly kitted out and with super friendly owners. I liked the instructor Anna Mayne, she was humble and the structure of the class was clear and challenging, I learned a lot in a short time I think.

I stayed for 2 classes; no GI grappling and the stand-up fighting. The rolling in the warm-up was the toughest part and left me nauseous for a good chunk of time and hours after I still feel a little queasy. We did some guards and mounts and I rolled with 3 men who were bigger than me and my main partner who is my size and weight (55kg). I thought such close contact with sweaty people would be hard but I really didn't care, I just wanted to be able submit someone and managed to with one opponent which surprised me. I now understand why a rashguard is advisable. I also didn't feel that gender was an issue, though the men seemed to sweat more?!

The boxing class after grappling was tough and we did sparring, since I haven't actually done it before in earnest and I didn't have a mouthguard it wasn't too crazy but I got a taste of contact boxing and like it. Got myself a mouthguard and will get my own gloves.

So for now I'm going to try doing these 2 classes a week and try to get to the women only classes in Liverpool so I get a variety of teaching styles. My training is going to broken up a bit as I'm getting an upper back tattoo in a week or so and won't be able to do much training for a bit, it's quite a large tattoo so not sure how long the healing process will be. I'm going to start a very structured beginners no-GI grappling course in about 4 weeks but until then I'll struggle along in the Tuesday and Saturday classes which are mixed ability.

other training this week:

Sunday 5/6

Body Pump
Body Combat

Mon 6/6

Tues 7/6

10/10 for taking this on, MMA would scare this shot out of me, and I'm an under 40 bloke (albeit under 40 by 6 weeks and a bit of a blouse).

Sounds like a full schedule there. Photos of the tattoo when its finished please!

Thanks Konstantin and Rach, the log title is of course inspired by my current avatar and tattoo-to-be which I am enormously excited about.

Probably more for general fitness than anything, Body Combat is just pure fun for me :-) I don't think anything can really prepare someone for the weirdness of grappling. My hips and legs are really sore today and I have what looks like a love bite on my neck, probably from one of the locks I was in because I don't recall anyone biting me.

Sunday 12/10

Body Pump
Body Combat

Two of my fellow gym friends are joining me for grappling next Saturday, yay, this will make Anna M my instructor happy, to quote her 'I think grappling should be in the national curriculum- especially for women'.

Thanks Hal :D I haven't read the books, the movies are ok, it's just Lisbeth I like though really. I see there's an American version now.

Well today I found out that my new grappling instructor and her girlfriend who also happens to be my main sparring partner is off travelling for a month and only back in August, boo. The tattoo, VF week and general weekend galivating outside of the UK and Manchester will put me out of action in terms of grappling for a few weeks anyway so it should work out ok. My tattoo is such a massive piece of work with lots of colour and detail that it's going to need a lot of TLC to maintain its integrity.

Yesterday my calf was a bit mushed from all the damn gingas and lunges and squats from my Pump and Combat classes so my training partner and I decided to just do upper body. The bench press area and the smith machine were both occupied so we decided to do some kettlebell and TRX work.

all with 8 kg kb each hand

3x8 push-up to renegade rows (push-up, row right, row left)
3x8 clean and press to push-up (clean, press, jump back to press-up, jump up)
3x8 straight renegade rows (just because my training partner wanted to do them)
TRX ab planks, side planks and suspended pike

Short and sweet really, could have done more but decided to call it a day.

If you make VF week, we will meditate to Merzbow, how's that for a mind gym challenge :P

I won't be abandoning yoga or meditation for sure, though formal guided meditation is on hold for summer as the counsellor is away. Yoga I should do more of, and dance and well everything but there are only so many hours in a day and factoring in recovery is a pain in the ass. I'm doing Body Jam today as I can't get to grappling in time.

meditating with merzbow, especially harsh era around late 80s beginning of the 90s ("merzbird" is fine as well, but the beat parts don't fit well with meditation), is serious stuff. you should do it in the dark, lying on the bed, with high volume, forgetting about the noise, erasing your thoughts and "only" concentrating on body parts: start with your toes and, bit by bit, explore the entire surface. let me know what happens after 10-15 minutes, ah!!!

I would go for "Pulse Demon"

Or his "Merbow Mixed Total" tape where he uses Matthew Bower's guitar noise as source material. You can get the latter here.

Or you could go for Kevin Drumm's "Sheer Hellish Miasma":
“Begin at the beginning,” the King said gravely, “and go on till you come to the end. Then stop.”
