Multivitamin

Postby Flaming Monkey » Sun Nov 15, 2009 3:06 am

So I just started taking a new multi and I'm not sure whether I'm supposed to chew it or swallow it. The directions simply say:

The directions wrote:For adults, one daily, with food.

I'm kinda leaning towards chewing it, even though it tastes terrible. Oh, and it's also an iron supplement if that changes things.

Just swallow it down with some orange juice as vit C is meant to assist iron absorbtion :)

Dunno about multivitamins specifically, but the absorption of many drugs taken in pill form is hindered by orange juice as several transporter proteins on the gut surface are blocked by compounds in fruit juice. Loads of people take all kinds of medicines (e.g. supplements, antibiotics, cardiovascular drugs, painkillers) at breakfast with orange, apple or grapefruit juice, yet these juices can halve the amount of drug crossing into the bloodstream.

So I'd skip the OJ and use a multivitamin with vitamin C in it already to achieve the same :D

Or perhaps take it with a good gulp of olive oil to aid the absorption of the fat soluble vitamins

Interesting about the orange juice and olive oil facts Gelert and Erske. :)

Sorry I was a little confused about his post. If it's just an iron supplement, instead of a "multivitamin iron supplement" (quite a few male specific multivitamins at least here in NZ don't contain iron, as often men get too much iron in their diet which is toxic in large amounts) then orange juice is still not a bad idea.

But as its obviously an "iron containing" multivitamin then don't listen to me and just follow Gelerts advice :)

Iron and Multivitamins

Postby Lordmuppet » Sun Jun 05, 2011 12:07 am

So i know that normally men are told to avoid iron in their multivitamins as there is typically more than enough in the diet.

Is this the same for us vegan men though or is this just a problem for those eating tons of animal products? I ask because I just bought a new bottle and was deciding between one with iron and one without.

thanks!

It's not a problem for men not because of diet, but mainly because of the reason that we don't menstruate .

Vegans tend to have lower iron levels due to plant i.e non-heme iron being poorly absorbed. As has been said when consuming iron rich foods eat some vitamin C foods alongside to aid absorption.

Personally i don't bother with synthetic vitamins/minerals unless deficiency. I do a blend of nettle leaf, alfalfa, seaweed powder, wheatgrass, spirulina, barley grass and chlorella. Sometimes oatgrass, watercress powder also. These all have various health benefits along with the bonus of being nutrient dense.

Not sure what you mean man?

If its about not bothering with synthetic etc i should have noted that b12 is the exemption being 100% vegan. But again not something i need to take daily, cycling b12 now and again is good enough.
