I think finding jeans without leather patches are easy, of course many models/brands are out of the question, but I don't think it's as hard as you seem to think. I'd love to buy more eco and fair-trade jeans, but they're hard to find, and often comes in quite dull and boring styles IMO.

Yeh, it's probably not that hard. For those in UK - Burtons don't appear to have patches generally I dont think. Also found a pair today in New Look which had no patch. But as I said I was trying to find someone which had a good ethical rating via ethical consumer.

Another annoying thing is when you get free belts with them which are leather or non-leather but have a tiny (possible) leather bit on them lol.

Does anybody know if Cheap Monday uses leather patches? They really don't feel like leather.

Go to TK Max they've got loads of jeans... I bought 3 pairs for £6 each from their sale rail, helps if you're a strange size I think, one pair is Firetrap, the others were random Italian brands Ive never heard of but they fit me and look good. It took ages and I thought I was going to lose the will to live at one stage but £18 for 3 top pairs of jeans made it all worthwhile :-)

I'm looking for some fairtrade vegan jeans. I emailed Howies to ask about patches and got this reply:

Thanks for your email – all the legwear in our current range have a paperboard howies patch, It’s a pretty cool fabric, it looks like the old recycled leather patches we used to use, but they obviously have no animal product or dye on them, so you can sleep easy.

They feel, wear and wash normally too so no worries there.

Hi Hiking Fox,

what is the case with Howies? Ethical Consumer give them a rating of 7, which is for instance, the same as H&M. They're on the bottom of the list below sportswear companies such as Fila and Kappa. Although companies get bad marks for failing to give information, so that could be it. They stated they give full maternity leave but no other info on their worker's code of conduct. I can't see much on their website about them being fairtrade.

I bought some Levis. Probably not a nice company, but they fitted right, didn't have a leather patch and I liked them. Anything more than that is hard to get. I'm still keeping an eye out for the organic/fairtrade stuff though. It just seems like there's none about really.

They were bought by Timberland a few years ago so maybe they inherit the same marks as their parent company.

I used to buy a lot of stuff from them five or ten years ago but I haven't for a while now.

I think that's cos they're now owned by Timbaland. It's a bit like Kingfisher toothpaste being bought by Boots; the product itself can be pretty right on, but the parent company isn't. I guess it is the same concept as buying Plamil mayonnaise from a supermarket.

I went down the EC list and couldn't find any of the top companies; their products no longer seem to be available. Hug doesn't seem to exist any more, the other brands only seemed to be available in small quantities in obscure sizes from bargain websites. The only brand I could find was Bishopston Trading, but the unisex jeans were ugly-looking with turn-ups at the bottom and I couldn't tell from the website whether the fitted women's jeans have leather patches or not. I emailed them and they haven't replied, yet.

I just emailed howies yesterday and they replied to tell me that heir latest patch of demin does contain leather. What is the POINT of that?!

I have replied to tell them why this is a bad idea.

I couldn't buy Howies jeans anyway, as there were all too low-waisted.

I eventually gave up trying to find fair-trade jeans and just bought some from Next, that had no patch and fitted well.

Yeh it's hard enough to find jeans that I like and fit well.

Surprisingly few fair-trade clothing products out their personally, I think. Although I am only going on Ethical Consumer's table, above a score of 10, so perhaps that's why.

Yes Next seems like the Next best thing!
