Does anyone know if there are any UK laws protecting crabs from being stored / sold in shops live?

No. The Animal Welfare Act 2006 doesn't apply to lobsters and crabs.

In the 80s I saw the damn French supermarkets when i was on holiday there...live lobsters and crabs to be poked and taken home alive. I imagine things are the same now.
Shellfish network might know other things you can do about this.
