New to the forum, kind of new to martial arts

Hi guys,

As the title says, I'm new to the forum and kind of new to martial arts.

I boxed a bit some years ago and I've been taking Krav Maga lessons for a month or so, building on some lessons I've had sporadically over the last two years.

I'm keen to learn a traditional martial art and I'm looking around at gyms at the moment.

I quite liked Fighting Fit Martial Arts in Manchester and also Impact Martial Arts in Eccles for their ninjutsu and jeet kune do classes respectively.

Basically it's not just the self-defence I'm looking for, I'm looking to improve fitness generally and maybe even try out a little MMA on an amateur basis (at almost 28 and being pretty much a blank canvas in respect of martial arts, I think fighting professionally would be out of my reach).

So, I'd be grateful for any suggestions you may have, recommendations as to schools, disciplines and people to look out for.

Also, I've been vegetarian for only a little over a year so any recommendations as to diet for martial arts training would be most welcome.

I'm grateful in advance for your responses.

Hows it going Yozzer?

Is it just a traditional martial art your looking to try out?

considered BJJ? you can compete in nogi to prepare you for an amateur mma fight. It is great for fitness, and if you wanna do MMA its a must to train in a grappling art.

Theres a feww bjj academys in Manc, Gracie Barra in eccles, BJJ Labs@Fighting fit and were i train @ Stealth Bjj in Oldham just off Junction 22 of the M60.

Fundamentals Classes are Mon 7-8 and weds 8-9, these classes are aimed at complete beginners to get used to the positions/movements and what bjj is all about. the link for the academy is in my signature.

as far as diet goes, i would suggest eat clean and healthy, avoid processed foods and refined sugars. that works for me and i train 6x a week.

Hey Ken, thanks for the reply.

I'm looking for a mix. I like Krav Maga because it's effective and straight to the point.

I like the idea of training in Jeet Kune Do because I loved Bruce Lee as a kid.

I like the idea of ninjutsu because it's kind of classical.

I think I'll try BJJ, thanks for the recommendation.

I don't think I'll make it over to Oldham as it's a bit far to get after work but if I do I'll give you a shout.

Can anyone tell me anything about Steve Powell? Would anyone recommend either Impact Martial Arts or Steve Powell over the other?

Thanks.
