Vegan Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge Sat 16th April :-)

Postby mabli » Thu Jan 06, 2011 3:17 pm

Our little team of vegan walkers is taking on the Yorkshire 3 Peaks again and we really, really would love some more vf folk to join us. We try to walk just a bit faster than others so we get to pass lots of people who see our vegan tshirts and get to associate vegans with being super fit. We often get comments such as “the vegans are shifting”. :-)

Its really good fun walking with a group of vegans, sharing treats on a hillside with jolly people you have lots in common with is a real pleasure.

The walk itself is quite tough, 39km with 1,600m of ascent. It starts at Horton-in-Ribblesdale and the route takes in Pen-y-ghent 694m, Whernside, 736m and Ingleborough 723m. It does get pretty muddy in places and folk need good walking boots, full water proofs etc, we’ll provide a proper kit list. There are two first aiders in the team, navigation will be provided but new folk do need to be competent and have a good fitness level. We cant take responsibility for folk especially if they do dim witted things like not eat, carry too much or too little kit or get pissed en route.
We’ll all be staying in Horton the night before and after so get to have a drink and a chill. We'll camp or stay in bunk barns

The aim of the walk is to complete in 12 hours, we would be hoping to do in less than 9

Hey, I'd be pretty interested in doing this! I'm in Yorkshire myself.

How much actual hillwalking fitness/experience do you need? I've walked up a few hills in my time, but nothing serious, and haven't done it in a year or two. On the other hand I have a fairly high level of fitness from martial arts, cycling, running etc, does that translate to a walk like this, ya think? And I know nothing about navigation etc.

Yay!!

I think it'll translate very well :-)

Its not so tough really, folk do sponsored walks in Y3P all the time its just requires a reasonable level of fitness and a bit of stamina really. The ground is pretty easy apart from muddy boggy bits, no scrambling, its hills not mountains.

No need for navigational skills, just a pair of comfy boots or approach shoes and waterproofs. :-)

In that case I'm interested...don't know if I'll be in the country, but if I am, I'm keen.

Sounds great, but its my final term of uni so I don't know if I will be able to make it until closer to the time. How much does a nights accomodation usually cost in Horton?

We'll be staying in either the bunkbarn at the Golden Lion which is £12 a night or camping in their field which I think is free :-)

Hope you can come :D

So hopefully we'll be doing this in two teams to add a bit of competitive edge to the day and make sure we get a good time :D
