How long do your shoes last?

Postby Konstantin » Mon Oct 25, 2010 1:32 pm

Someone told me that your shoes need to be replaced every 500 miles. That's about 2-3 pairs a year for me, but My shoes usually last me well over a year. They get replaced when they look like they need it, or feel crap in terms of support.

Is 500 miles a benchmark put out by the manufacturers?

Yeah - I'm with you. I was always told a year or 500 miles (the year was supposed to be because of chemical breakdown of midsole or something).....

I think it depends how you run and where you run as so how and where they get worn out, but I tend to have 2 or 3 pairs a year and rotate them. Like you say I replace when they feel a bit crap, but then I always notice how nice a bouncy my new shoes are! I've manged to blame an injury before on worn out shoes .. so I try to get the balance right to replace them, somewhere-not-too-long-after-500-ish-roughly ... a very exact science!

This post has reminded to me to go and buy some shoes for the heavy winter miles... oh joy .. another £50 ;-)

There's an interesting article on shoe life and performance based on 30 000 pairs of running shoes on Fetch. ... 2010-08-20

I basically wear my shoes until they fall apart. I've had my current "favorite" pair for over 4 years and they're the best for long runs. They probably have a couple thousand miles on them I do have another pair of running shoes I wear for short runs, but I just can't get used to them for some reason. I would have retired the old ones after the marathon, but I have yet to find shoes that are comparably comfortable. I am slowly transitioning to the vibram fivefingers, but my calves and ankles still have a long way to go in terms of strength before I can exclusively run in the 5F.
My boyfriend has the same philosophy about shoes and neither of us have had problems or injuries yet (knock on wood). I agree though - it depends if your shoes get worn out evenly or only on one side, etc - in the latter case you might be aggravating a stride problem (?). I don't really know much about this, but running in old shoes has worked really well for me so far.
Or maybe I'm just a cheapskate, haha :D

I was always told about the 500 mile rule for road running, but like most I take it with a pinch of salt (low sodium naturally).

Also has anyone read 'Born To Run' by Christopher McDoughall, some interesting points about the modern running shoe in there that really got me thinking, well worth a read if your a keen runner.

I only seem to get an average 400 miles out of a pair before the heal wears down on the outside to the point where I think it affects my form so replace them. Expensive business, works out about 15p a mile :(

I've got a wonky leg though, I'd expect those more biomechanically balanced to get a few more miles out of a pair.

My Vibrams are over 1200 miles and still in pretty decent shape. I'm working on breaking in a new pair though :)
