It feels like a bad development with illusion of sharing information which doesnt actually reach the people searching for it.
Although I agree to some extent, I wouldn't say that FB is insular. Sure, if you never share anything yourself the virality of the information stops right there, but for most people this is not the case. A couple of weeks ago a 17 year old girl managed to get 10 000 people to come to an anti-rasism demonstration in Stockholm in less than 24 hours, almost all done via Facebook. Hardly what I call insular and closed. Word of mouth is powerful, if people really share stuff among themselves, which quite a lot of people do.
Discussion forums like this has another way of reaching out, but I wouldn't have them in opposition, but rather different ways of getting the message out there.
