Tight shoulders!

Postby BlueRose » Sat Sep 04, 2010 12:35 pm

One consistent comment I've gotten from my sports massage therapist is that my shoulders are tight, tight, tight...and these days they've been getting far more of a workout than they normally do with Insanity and now I'm waking up stiff and sore.

Can anyone recommend good exercises for this sort of thing? I would imagine that running around like crazy up and down stairs and to buses and subway trains with a purse strap over your shoulder and VERY heavy laptop bag 5 days out of 7 has contributed to this, and am wondering if anyone had any similar probs and how to resolve.

Thanks!

I swim. My shoulders are nice and loose.

No, she leaves to sell herself to another employer. She's driven by the same hunger. Thus the worker's liberty is only a theoretical freedom, lacking any means of realization; an utter falsehood."

No access to a pool and live in New England besides, alas. If only I could afford to live in FL for the winter with me and my cats...

Hey!
I swam every other day when I was at U Mass in Amherst! I grew up in the Northeast and swam every day (winter included). There's a lot of (indoor) pools around. However, they normally have a fee associated, so I can understand not swimming.

...but that's what works for me. When I run and my shoulders get tight, or when I bike, and my back starts acting up... I just jump in the pool for a set of 5 X 200 IM's and finish it off with 5 X 100 Free and I'm all fixed up by the end.

Oh neat! Well...I don't have anything like that near me as far as I know. I'm at the eastern end close to Boston.

I *know* they have pools in east Mass.

Swimming is what works for me. It might not be your cup of tea, though. But, if shoulder issues really are a problem, it won't hurt to try a swim at your local Y.

I get the suspicion that when you say "shoulders" you really mean traps/upper back, in which case you can do some self-myofascial release with some PVC pipe and lacrosse balls.

Here's an excellent manual: http://www.robertsontrainingsystems.com ... manual.pdf

It's everything: neck and shoulders. I went to my sports massage therapist yesterday (EXCELLENT timing given I came off of month 1 and recovery week of Insanity) and she gave me some neck and shoulder exercises to do regularly.

I'll check it out...thanks!
