lower back pain

Postby nikitasa » Tue Aug 17, 2010 7:24 am

Can lower back pain suggest something serious or just a bad mattress? I'm experiencing lower back pain, but it's not consistent. When I say "lower", I mean at the very end of my back bone. Most of the time it occurs after waking up and sometimes when I walk. I know I can't be diagnosed here, but I just thought maybe someone could share any similar experiences.

I know a new matress sorted out the back pain I always used to wake up with, but best to get yours checked...

It can be a range of things, and even fairly "simple" causes can wreck your life as you know it. It would be worth seeing a suitable professional (from personal experience, I'd suggest you be wary of osteopaths and chiropractors, GPs, physiotherapists and orthopaedic consultants - which doesn't leave much!) for advice and diagnosis.

In the first instance though, see whether careful but thorough stretching to increase mobility (and generally being mobile) helps - cheaper than a new mattress.

1. STRETCH regularly. 2x15 mins each day. front and side splits are essential.

2. Check if you legs are equal length. They probably aren't. Ask Gelert for instructions on this.

3. DEADLIFT properly. And do dry swimming (straight arms lat pulldowns). This will strengthen your spinal erectors.

4. If buying a new mattress, only buy at a store which has a pressure monitor device and are willing to spend several hours with you testing their entire range to find a product which suits YOUR BODY best. Do not believe ANY advertisements, features, sales talk or hefty price tags, ONLY BUY A MATTRESS IF THEY HAVE AN ERGOCHECK OR XSENSOR device and they are willing to cater to your needs to find the best mattress specifically for your body.
Next time, I'll spend the money on drugs instead.

I'd say try and be more mobile. Sitting all day will wreck your back, standing up and wondering round from time to time will remedy this.

Your backbone goes all the way to your butt. The coccyx is your "tail bone" and is below your hips. I suspect you mean lower lumbar? Like right where your back and hips meet? I had chronic lower back pain for my entire life, and the one thing that made the biggest difference and stopped about 80% of the pain was to put my wallet in my front pocket! If you keep your wallet in your back pocket, this might be the problem. It can tilt your pelvis just enough to cause chronic issues.

The second most effective thing to eliminate back pain was abdominal strength. I have not thrown my back out or had any chronic pain issues in my lower back since I lost a bunch of weight and began regular exercise.

However, I do occasionally wake up with a sore back. I notice it most often after a long day of sitting. I am a stomach sleeper, so I think what happens is my hip flexors get tight while sitting, then when I go to sleep on my stomach, my spine is experiencing more lordosis than normal. Stretching before bed always seems to helps.

Do you sleep on your stomach, back, or side?

I swear by my osteopath (sorry Gelert)- went very much on recommendation of lots and lots of others who had been to him- I wouldnt fancy just picking one from the phone book.

I use him for mainly lower back (injured 3 years ago) but also for keeping on top of the spondylosis in my neck.
It took just 3 words to make me vegan- Put Calves First
