Where to put the hair?

Postby Ombah » Wed May 05, 2010 6:11 pm

I have quite long hair - a little bit down my shoulders - and I don't know where to put it when I wear a helmet. Sadly, this makes me skip wearing hemlet a lot. It doesn't make it better that I have quite massive dreads on the back of my head that takes up a lot of space in the hemlet.

What to do? I really don't want to cut it off!

Maybe a small trailer? Or shave it off then glue the dreads to the back of your helmet so people still think you have them?

don't know really, seems like if you find a helmet where you can fit the dreads will probably have to be too large to fit snugly on your head and to keep in place in case of a crash... riding without a helmet seems like a pretty bad idea. I'd prioritize my head before my hair style any day, but that's me.

True, but I've tried short hair. It just isn't me.

I'm sure you're more than your hair, and a stroke of bad luck will definitely change who you are more drastically than any change of hair style will ever do :) of course one might argue the risk involved in riding without a helmet, and that this risk is quite small, but to me even the smallest risk makes it worth it.

I managed to get an 'oversize' helmet from Condor in London for when I had a full head of dreads. I just tied them back (below helmet) and it worked fine. I had to get a smaller helmet when I cut them all off - so just try and get an oversize one (I think mine was MET ... went to the shop to try it on too)...

Don't compromise your style or your safety :-)

I wish I could get a cycling cap that fitted people with lots of hair :(

My hair is to my waist, so I knot it up into a ponytail--and I have it poking out through the helmet strap in the back.

Dreadlocks provide crash protection similar to that of a helmet.

Well, perhaps if you're thinking of the pre-80ies style leather things cyclist used (which was quite useless except from stopping you from getting road rash on the skull). Modern helmets are quite different from soft cushions. they are made to absorb the energy from hitting your head, and breaking while doing so. Now I'm not the one sporting dreadlocks here, but I'm pretty sure they don't work that way :D

Jokes people, jokes. Maybe though you could get dreadlocks crusty enough to employ shock resistance.

he he, well you never know with those hippies

it's hard to know if someone is joking or actually posting something they believe in, I mean compared to what some people post online this wasn't that obvious (like that LCHF person who was puzzled she didn't lose weight despite drinking coconut fat several times a day. for real).
