Just a weeeeeeeeeeee bit!
Here is one of the comments I found:
". not a lot of (which means not really any) spectators. And it's west Texas, so the course is flat and the scenery doesn't change. But you can get a pretty good time on such a flat course, so "

It's just a thought. Still looking but I want something by the end of October.

I only got 21k in this week. It was finals at school and I'm tapering for the double marathon on the 15th. Taking it pretty easy.

5/5 - 8k
5/8 - 13.1k

Yeah - sorry, forgot to say "bummer" about not getting in your ballot gms. I say go for the desolate marathon :-) My first one they actively discouraged spectators ... hilarious.

So .. the gauntlet is down! (must remember its not a competition!! :-)). It looks like KjKranz and myself have some ultras coming up soon - so expect those miles to start ticking upwards!

Oops! I messed up my totals last week. I missed 4/24 and screwed everything up. So, here are the right numbers in line with the right week: 4/24 (12.9 km), 4/25 (9.7 km), 4/26 Rest, 4/27 (9.7 km), 4/28 (12.9 km), 4/29 Rest, 4/30 (9.7 km). Sorry, I screwed it up!

Here are my totals for the week:

5/1: 5 M (8 km)
5/2: 11 M (17.7 km)
5/3: Rest
5/4: 8 M w/5x800 repeats @ 5K RP (12.9 km)
5/5: 5.5M (8.9 km)
5/6: 8M (12.9 km)
5/7: 7.5M w/8x100m strides (12.1 km)
5/8: 6M (9.7 km)
5/9: 15 M (24.1 km)

I'm going to have to start posting based on the weeks in my running log or I'm going to get this confused...again! :D

So, I was thinking about running a marathon this weekend, but found one even closer to home, so I think that I'm going to run one on May 22nd instead. Seems really low-key and it's the first year, too bad it isn't certified, so I guess I could end up running 25 or 29?

Gms: Are you willing to travel for a marathon? Sorry you didn't get into St. George! Have you checked out marathonguide.com?

Ilovecake: Hope this week is happier for you!

KjKranz: Double marathon? Wow! I see that you have an Ironman coming up in July. Wow!

For those of you who run ultras, do you run them on trails/roads/both? Not that I'm looking at doing one anytime soon, but I'd like to run one eventually. I don't really have many trails around here and found a few road 50 milers. How do you train for 50 milers vs a marathon? More double back to back long runs? I guess most ultras lean toward trails, right? Would 50K be the next best step or would 50 miles be good?

Thanks. I think Odessa might work well with work but I'm still looking.

 This is not a competition.......for the most part. This challenge started as a friendly bet/motivation. I'm only out to beat one person in km/miles run. So you and KjKranz can feel free to pass my totals any time!!!!!

All miles/km updated to this point.

aflicki-last week totals corrected, I don't mind traveling and I've been looking around on the marathon guide. It will probably end up whatever doesn't have a lottery and works in with work.

Just my local marathon, they cap it at 300 people so nothing special. I'm going to start at 2am and run the course as a warm up for the marathon, which starts at 7.

If you want, you can check out my blog in my sig for some more info :)

Good work :-) - Always nice to see others considering joining the ultra wagon ....

I think that for the most part your training can be quite similar to marathon training, just with longer weekend runs or like you say back to back long runs at the weekend. I've spent some weekends doing a 33 miler on Sat and then 15 on Sun. Or sometime just 20 miles on Sat & Sun. But as with marathon training - this isn't all the time, you have to mix this long stuff in with easier weeks and see how your body responds.Weekly mileage doesn't have to be that high at all - just keep marathon fit and then ad some 'painful' long ones so body and mind are used to what will be coming! I'm a firm believer that most of it is mental - if you can run a marathon, you're fit enough to run 40 ... you just need the right mindset (bloody minded stubbornness :-))

I've done both trail and road.... its better for the body and mind if it's trail, I reckon. No need to do a 50K I reckon (that just seems like a marathon and a jog back to the car it's so similar) ... In the UK there are quite a few at 40 & 45 miles, I started with a 45 .. which was tough, but that's why we do them! So straight in at 50 miles is quite tough, but easily doable ... maybe go for a 50K if you want to test the water, or see of there is a 40 miler (perfect start distance I reckon...)

My favourite ultra quote

"Going for a run always clears my head, doing an ultra distills my soul" ... that just about sums it up.

I followed the 75mpw schedule and finally got my Boston in 2009. I'm thinking of using it again for the next marathon (once I pick one for the fall) but probably the 50mpw. They have a solid program.
