Vegan sports drinks?

Postby BlueRose » Wed Jan 20, 2010 4:48 pm

Looked for this topic, couldn't find it--could've SWORN I saw it at some point. I'm dismissing it as a fever-induced hallucination.

Vegan sports drinks! Doing a 39 mile walk over a two day period, so replenishing electrolytes will be a happy thing. Is SmartWater good for that or is another drink recommended?

Thanks! :)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't most sports drinks vegan? Like gatorade and such? Is there anything in them that would make them not vegan? (like colourings or sth?)

Given all the weird crap that I see put into fruit juices like carmine and what-not, I play it safe. :P

Is Gatorade vegan? I typically just stick to either water or the 10 cal Vitamin Water.

I used to have staminade powder that you mix up and that was vegan. Also powerade in bottles. Unsure what it would be like in the US though.

Carmine would just single out red flavours though, wouldn't it?

The US is craptastic when it comes to putting weird shit in food and drinks. I shop at places like Whole Foods for this very reason. At least in the UK they label things explicitly as being vegetarian or vegan friendly. :(

Yeah I think carmine's a red colored thing...

I am of the understanding that a simple mix of 1 part fruit juice and 2 parts water is the best thing to drink during intensive exercise. Add glucose powder or chew dextrose tablets if you want additional quick release energy.

Energy gels and drinks seem vastly overpriced for what they do. Also, they taste nasty.

Add a tiny bit of salt to that mix and you have an electrolyte drink as well.

Also red bull is definetley vegan, if you had just a few more miles to go!

I can't see how a sports drink will do much but send your blood sugar soaring and making you hungry. Walking is pretty low intensity after all.

Wouldn't nuts etc to snack on be a better idea, for the sustained energy you'll need, rather than the quick max efforts sports drinks are aimed at.

Looking for a *real* sports drink, as in to replenish electrolytes. This is walking 39 miles; we're not talking a trip to the grocery store here. :)

I assume you will be able to get drinking water along the walk?
If you just want electrolytes, what about something like Nuun tablets? They are vegan, see the FAQ here: http://www.nuun.com/nuunis/faq.html
And it would be less to carry than enough bottles of sports drinks.

So, if you're looking for something more 'sports drinky' - I do High 5 (energy source I think). Some of the things I've found you have to look for are any protein in the drink and also maybe leucine (I remember seeing that on something and being put off until I could ask the manufacturer).

They have a doc on what's in their stuff here..

Nuts aren't a good choice while walking, as they're high in both fat and protein and these are the worst things to eat while exercising (though great afterwards).

Gatorade and Powerade are fine for vegans as far as I know and although they're kind of gross, they work ok if you've been sweating a lot. Clif has a sports drink now too, which has a bit less additives and whatnot if you're worried about that sort of thing. And of course there's always the homemade option of mixing 1 part juice and 1 part tap water with a pinch of salt.

We're not talking about fueling for sprints, or a marathon. It's walking. :?

The protein and fat keep you feeling full and for sustained low-intensity effort can keep the body well fed.

I have never had Lucozade or any sports drink even when I've cycled 30 miles, done a short sharp 'met-con', or max effort weights at training so I do speak from personal experience. I can't fathom why any would want high glycemic load simple sugars for walking.

Agree with the comment above about juice and salt although I would use squash to keep the sugar content down as sugar can cause dehydration too.
