When becoming vegan...

Postby ruby_pyro » Wed Dec 02, 2009 11:12 am

Hi guys I have been vegan for nearly 2 months, and I have noticed I am quite tired recently.

I was wondering what changes my body is going through at the moment if someone could give me advice???

Thanks

Ruby

Hey Ruby
Hard to really say without some more information. Could you give an example of what you eat on a normal day?

Have you you recently started doing any thing new? Your tiredness might not be related to your diet.

it has been associated with the fact that I am doing work experience in a theatre atm. And also due to a bit of emotional stress..

I was mainly wondering what does happen to the body when going vegan.. I have quite a heavy protein diet..

Meat and dairy are quite calorie dense. You may just need to eat more volume and more carbs. Did you mean you have a lot of protein now, or before you were vegan? Either way, you're probably getting enough now, it's hard not to.

I did OD on cheese when i was a vegetarian, which caused me to have a stomach ulcer and made me become a vegan. I am eating a bit more carbs atm. I think just to keep me going in the theatre!!!

Nothing wrong with carbs, you need to get your energy from something.
Let us know what you eat in a regular day.

It can vary usually its: -

Breakfast
Toast with peanut butter and jam

Snack - Fruit or frys chocolate bar

Lunch - Now this can vary, I like a falafel but sometimes I make a bean chilli/sweet & sour mix (recipe given by Toothache Thanks!) which involves 2 types of pulses usually chickpeas and adzuki beans, onions, tomatoes, garlic, spices, peppers and the sauce oh and good oil. This is done with either cous cous or brown rice.

Snack - Crisps (I am very partial to crisps)

Dinner - Linda Mcartney Sausages, Hash Browns, steamed broccoli and peas, and vegan gravy with good oil in.

Thats the usual of what I eat in a day.

Any coffee or the like? How well are you sleeping?

I know it's a bit 20-questions, but that looks alright to me so we could probably widen the search.

My first thought is that whatever is getting you down is draining you more than you think; humans ain't machines running off fuel but complex beings with powerful emotions, it might be that you need a little space and me-time to unwind. Also the work you are doing sounds pretty intense and if that is affecting your sleep you've got a vicious circle type thing :?

If it is to do with your food though, the only things I can think of to check would be whether you get enough iron, vit D or calcium. Maybe eat more of the same stuff? Like Kon sez, you might just be running a calorie deficit...

I am limited on my caffiene. I have herbal tea and usually squash, but occaisonally a diet coke. Yes there are long hours in my work. But when I go to sleep I am out and hardly dream, except for last night for like two seconds where I was dreaming about a pink and black uke.

Maybe I should eat more in which I have to run up and down stairs most of my working day.

Hey Ruby, dont be shy of carbs, they are good fuel!Do you watch your B12 as well?not that im suggesting it could be a reason for unwarrented tiredness, but it is really important.
Im also partial to crisps,..(the perfect salt/fat/savoury/fast snack :))

Try increasing your water intake by 1/2 to 1 gallon a day.
My husband got worn out when his schedule got longer and when I had him increase his water intake his energy went back up.
Hope this helps some.
