slipping on mat

does anyone else have this problem? is my mat just cheap? is there something I should spray on it or prep it with before my practice? I'm afraid of slipping and hurting myself haha

Use chalk on your hands and feet, it's what some ashtangi's (who do fast and sweaty yoga) use. The best way to condition your mat is to use it a lot, wash it often and walk on it when you aren't using it for yoga (without shoes of course). I'd recommend the mat I use but it's heavy and expensive- it's called a Treemat, is made from rubber and needs no conditioning because of its profile and texture. When you are settled somewhere for chunk of time look into investing in one of them. http://www.yogamad.com/Yoga/Yoga+Mats/E ... ubber.html It does last forever though, had mine for about 5 years and it's still going strong so it was totally worth the money.

yeah I've tried that before. I don't really like the feeling of the towel and would only use it as a last resort. thanks though!

flux - the Tree mat looks cool, definitely an investment I can't make at the moment. will have to just stick with my Argos mat haha. are you planning on leading any yoga sessions at VFW by the way?

My problem was solved when I bought cotton mat to be on top of the slim yoga mat.

In yoga retrite last week I realised this problem. Earlier I haven't sweated that much. LAst evening I did a practise and I was afraid of hurting myself at times. Practising jumps was a bit... In the retrite I had a small towel; I swept the sweat off with it. It worked well. Last evening I forgot the towel home. I saw many people using the extra mat. If the towel isn't enough perhaps the extra mat is must.

Unfortunately, I have found myself in the same predicament. The worst part is that I've used the, supposedly, really good ones and they've also slipped on me. Don't even get me started on Step Aerobics boards. I almost broke my neck on one of those. Yeesh!

Anyway, to alleviate the matters -- I would just take "mighty" hard steps. Just to make a conscious effort to kind of "stomp" the ground so you have a grip of it the mat. It's worked for me at least. . . . but I've been ultra paranoid about falling so that's why I do it. Good luck!

I've also seen yoga socks; I think they have similar for hands.

I've been using my weight lifting gloves (can I just say RIGHT NOW how much I despise that the women's had to be PINK??? ) for similar reasons, been doing all kinds of crazy floor work and I can't always manage to get my rings off.

I have a special cotton mat for yoga and have no problems with this, try to purchase it. Do not buy just simple mats

For $10 and $2 off with a coupon, I got myself yoga gloves. That solved my problem!
