Very tough but very beautiful triathlon

Postby skoptic » Mon Sep 14, 2009 6:40 pm

I did a very tough half ironman tri at the weekend .. with a killer bike ride (56 miles with just short of 7000 ft ascent and descent). Thought I'd share it with everyone because while it was incredibly tough, it was also stunningly beautiful, riding from Teignmouth in Devon up onto Dartmoor (in the UK).

We swum in the sea at Teignmouth to start, rode up and through Dartmoor with constant hills (one which was 450ft ascent in 0.5 miles) including 3 or 4 20% descents with some tight switchback corners, then we ran 15 miles round Dartmoor trails (which at points was more like fell running!)

It's a small event with only about 30 competitors, and only costs £50 ... superbly organised. If you're up for a challenge - I recommend it!

Great job! I don't think I'm quite up to this kind of challenge just yet, but I will be one day soon. Do you have any plans to compete in similar events? How about XTerra type off road events (ocean swim, mountain bike ride, off road trail run)?
If you've got pictures we'd love to see 'em!

Good work on finishing! Sounds like a great event, don't think I'd cope too well with the swimming or biking though :)

I spotted some ads for this triathlon on holiday, maybe you can have a crack at this one next  http://www.inferno.ch/index.php?page=269

Good work! If I was in the UK, I might try that as my first half ironman.

Finishing one of those is no small feat. Especially with all that elevation gain. Ouch. Good work!

Thanks Dave Noisy ... I did post it here because of the extreme bike ride - which was the main point of my post, but do what you MUST. You seem even more NOISY with caps lock on :-)

Cheers everyone else for the feedback - that Tri in China looks crazy, kind of a quadrathlon where you road bike and then mountain bike. I'll keep the site in my favourites for now... I'm more of a road cyclist really (must remember to talk about cycling more in this thread ) - so haven't thought of any Xterra stuff yet. My mountain bike doesn't have any suspension and I don't have kids yet! Heh!

There are some brilliant photos here ... it was a scorcher.

No such thing as an extreme bike ride if you like your bike :)

Fair point ... Some of those hills down your neck of the woods though .... take some getting used to! :)

I clearly need more training in the South West ......
