eat it, but if product A says traces and B doesnt.. I buy B.

Yeah. I understand that. (thumbs up)

Basic reason of asking; Rivita minis..... apart from the cheese and chive (or whatever flavour?) they're all 'vegan' apart from the whole 'traces of' thing - So i thought i'd just double check!

FWIW, I try to avoid stuff labelled in that way if there's an alternative that doesn't warn for traces of dairy, purely (heh) because I'd rather support the company that doesn't also produce food that contains dairy. If that makes any sense at all.

But it's all relative, and essentially the products are vegan, as others have said!

I eat things that say they may contain traces of milk - if my throat swells then it bloody well contains huge traces, so I don't repeat the experience. (So far that hasn't happened, but I can tell if there is any significant milk content in things that way in general! And it puts people off lying to me...) If it were traces of fish i'd be more put off, mostly because it implies a lower standard of prevention for cross-contamination. I can understand how milk or egg might get on biscuits, for example, but not how fish would.
I'd also be inclined to compare it to a cup that had had egg in it but been washed more or less well since then. (Which I occasionally have to)

I eat these products because I know that some companies who are just starting out can't afford to use their own machines and need to share them with companies who use animal biproducts. I'd assume that the machines are cleaned and since I've never tasted milk or anything funny I'm sure there are controls to make sure that the majority of it is gone before their product touches the machines.

I am fairly certain he would say "if it has a label on it, I would not eat it."

I eat it too. Some vegan chocolates are labelled with that slogan because they are produced on the same machines as the milk chocolate is.

I was just wondering, what is everyone's view on foods that 'may contain traces of milk' etc?
Would you eat it? Or give it a miss?

I eat it.

Honestly, it typically means made on same equipment. To go to such extremes to avoid any and all surfaces that have touched meat and dairy, I'd have to throw out all of my cookware, utentils, and china, get new counters, and do the vegan equivalent of kashering my kitchen--and I think that's just plain nuts.

I concur. If that were the case I wouldn't be able to eat anything in my house, thanks to the hubby :?

Yup, and then there's my dad, who comes to visit. Our diets could not possibly be more different. He usually comes in with a ton of food in stow that my mom gives him because, I'm guessing, she thinks he'll starve in a vegan house.

think about it this way. there are very FEW pure VEGAN restaurants. SO if a restaurant has a few good VEGAN dishes, but serves meat/dairy, there's a good chance that their vegan dishes may contain traces of blah blah blah. how does one know they don;t cook the veg burger on the same grill. did they clean the pan out completely, etc.

i don;t need to stress out about hat sort of things. a pure vegan restaurant is great!, but I'll still support places that at least will serve a good vegan meal.

That is one thing that many people LOVE about my wife's B&B. that it's 100% vegan. unless someone has a specific allergy, her customers have nothing to worry about.

There's an awesome omni music club and restaurant near me that's VERY vegan friendly and has a dedicated vegetarian fryer.

I'm not sure about 'may contain traces', whereas i always buy stuff that says 'made in a factory that processes...' i always worry may contain traces may use milk etc in the recipes...but i guess on second thought they are similar things...
