Riding around

Postby Alistar » Sun Jul 19, 2009 8:58 am

Well today went on my 2nd bikeride since my last 130k race mid April(26th out of ~700) so I was so unfit! Weathers been really cold and wet for the last couple of months and personal shit means I haven't really felt like it...

After reading that Hayden Rouslton(local guy) came 3rd in last nights stage in the Tour de France I got all inspired!

Beautiful if quite cold day today but the sun was shining for a change  so got my gears on and headed out the door. I live really close to the water in a big harbour on a Peninsula so there are hills in all directions- most of them not too large though. But bugger-all(hardly any) flats...

Anyways decided to bike to the top of Evans pass(210m and around 7% gradient) and back.

Pretty hard going and started to "bonk" or "hit the wall" up the last hill a couple of k's from home. I was pretty slow though

5 :( 4km in 2hr14:46 or 24.0kph average. Max 64.1kph
Evans pass 12min51

Glad to hear you're back in the saddle. :)

I'd die if I attempted all those hills, but it sounds like you live in a beautiful area by the water, so at least I'd die happy. :P

Cheers fella's! :D

Biked to the Inlaws (32k's away...) to watch the TDF yesterday. Anyway got new batteries for the HR monitor. Scary! My HR was maxxing out going up the hills and I didn't even think I was going that hard out. 'Spose even getting to the top is pretty hard for the body atm. Just making sure I (mostly) keep it over 10kph even up the steep parts. Was thinking the HR monitor must be reading wrong but today when I came home after staying he night it was exactly the same...

Anyway heres my numbers which will be interesting to look back on and compare later on...

25th July Home to Fendalton via Dyers pass 32.17km in mod Nor West wind
time 1hr19:55 Av 24.1kph
185max HR  153Av In range 55:46 Over (163) 23:22 (btw my max is 187)

26th light Nor East wind...30.48km(different route) ridetime 1hr16:52 Av 23.7
186maxHR  152Av in range(120-163 or 64 to 87%max) 42:12 over 29:56

Hackthorne to Dyers Pass 21min28

Thanks helmut! :)
Yeah had a beautiful ride today. Perfect conditions. Bugger-all wind, and the Sun was shining. :D Wish I took the camera in the end, as I wanted to post the view from the top of "The Bastard" looking down the harbour. But only remembered 2k's down the road, turned around but then thought "stuff it" so continued on my way...

Misplaced my newish HR watch so had to take my (really) old one which doesn't give much info.
Anyway the heart rate was quite a bit down but I made sure I kept it for the most part under 160bpm's(85%max) as I want to get more efficient at low revs.

So home to Gebbies, up Bastard to the Sign of the Kiwi, Summit Rd to Lyttelton, then back around the bays to home.
Definately felt a bit stronger...

2hrs47:34 66k's av23.6

Gebbies 7:20
Bastard 19:50
Last hill 5:24

HR ~140's av. maxHR I saw while sprinting to the top of the big B, 177

Woohoo - way to get back into things!

I would suspect your actual MaxHR is higher than 187 if you've gotten within 2bpm in the last few rides...

For example, the highest i've ever recorded is 210, but that was once (on a Kilo effort). I've seen in the 202-204 range several times, so suspect that is more realistic.

I've averaged ~186 several times in Points races on the track, for 15-25mins.

My 'regular' training intensity keeps me in the 160-165 range tho, and my LT(1hr) is prolly in the 176-180 range.

Hey Dave, thats interesting regarding your HR info...I should try and work out my Lactate Threshold sometime - sounds painfull!

Yeah I'm sure now that my HR monitor was skipping/misreading a bit...but I've lost it under a couch or something so it doesn't matter  . At least my (super) old HR monitor is reading more sensibly.

Me and a few local guys have a competition up some local hills and Last yr I sprinted up this local 3k /300m high climb in 12min something trying to beat this guys time (atm I'm doing it closer to 17min), and nearly died at the top and I got to 186bpm. Died in the last 16%pinch to the top and missed out by 3seconds btw :(

So I'm sure your right. It just wouldn't get that close to my max unless I was really pushing it even when unfit. My resting heart rate is around 40 flat when fully fit (52bpm untrained and being a blob) so probably just means I have a relatively big heart, so my max is also relatively low.

hmm..i tend to hit my max hr on shorter, super-intense efforts, not so much on longer efforts...
