Epic Riffs

Postby KC Masterpiece » Tue Jul 07, 2009 4:02 am

I got in an argument recently about the best riffs in "rock music." Hopefully it's obvious how tongue in cheek the whole thing was.

Here are the contenders:

Frankenstein by Edgar Winter: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m98wtZVRA-Y

or

Jump by Van Halen: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2chh6 ... jump_music

The only note i'll make is that awesome as Jump is, Frankenstein was ONE of the precursors of the epic riff.

Other suggestions? Votes?

Best riff ever is no doubt this:

I probably wouldnt categorize it as rock though, but still.

Just heard that the other day for the first time  definitely badass.

Maybe I should retitle the thread "Epic (Lame) Riffs" :)

http://www.rtlist.net/ go down to "Vincent Black Lightning 1952".

Not my usual cup-o'-tea, but an awesome riff...

well i give it to Jump - that eddie winter guy he's related to jonny winter? they're all albino? crazy. Anyhow, yeah any riff that involves a keyboard instead of a guitar is going to be lame.

#1 worst riff ever that people love: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSYxT9GM0fQ

or maybe this is the worst: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVEauKLYUR0 since it's using the perfect pitch singing thing for the riff - even worse than a keyboard!

here's a good (but short) non-guitar riff to try and make up for that: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYMKxmJ7_Ww&feature=fvst

and to make up for that mental trauma, here are some real riffs

RIFFS! Some good ones here. Jump is terrible and should be expunged from the collective memory, but I think Frankenstein is actually really good! Probably in the minority there though.

Three great ones. TO BE PLAYED AT MAXIMUM VOLUME.

That first one gave me an epileptic seizure

However - a Vilalobos track, Clem I had no idea you were a man of such fine taste!!!!! He's fantastic. If you like that you might like this one, the riff or main theme is at its best - check in around 2:10

Lightening Bolt and Villalobos tracks are great! Why that Fall one though?

Bronco I'm inclined to agree with you on the Slayer track, amazing and memorable riff.

Ah. Good ol' Slayer. Always makes me smile. "Seasons in the Abyss" was always a great song too.

I like "Shewolf" from Megadeth:

Beautiful vocals too.

especially since in that link i posted the band look they're still coming down off the acid trip from 40 years ago when they came up with the riff in the first place

The Slayer and Jimi riffs are my favourite from the ones listed so far. There are all number of other classics that come to mind could choose from, but I do think Layla still works for me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0WUdlaLWSVM And even more so when I found out it was actually Duane Allman's riff, not Eric Clapton's.

However; how can you top this.....
Iron Maiden.
Lucozade.
Daley
fucking
Thompson.

Unfortunately the sound is slightly cut at the beginning. But even so. 8)

Oh that's a classic, I love it. That one was playing as the sun came up over the river in Berlin this New Year. Matthew Jonson is king of rinsing a riff for all it's worth.

YOU QUESTION THE FALL??
  They are the riff kings/queens, and unquestionably the best British band ever. I get a bit emotional when The Fall are discussed.
