i know i'll be shunned for speaking this in a holistic forum, but i'd recommend sorting out one's life and problems rather than heading towards druggy shaman land.

Check out trackerschool.com, or pick up any one of Tom Brown, Jr's books on Tracking, Nature Awareness, Wilderness Survival, etc. Tom was raised by a Native American who taught him many of the old ways, which Tom now teaches at his school. I've been to some of his classes and they are amazing. I would recommend The Tracker, The Vision, The Quest, or Awakening Spirits to start.

Nothing druggie about that kind of shaminism, just living close to the earth and having respect for all living things.

go to an independent bookstore that's kind of new-agey and ask the people that work there what books to start with.

there's probably also a community of people where you live that are in to this kind of thing, and you can probably meet them through the notice board in these bookstores.

another route would be to actually seek out native people, get to know them, live with them, etc.

There's loads of different angles on this, eg:

*Genuine native Americans and such people following traditions.

*People cashing in on imagery.

*Drug-induced methods, which can be part of the first category. Terence McKenna spent loads of tiem taking massive doses of hallucinogenics with native south americans, who were all healthy (unlike people who do the same with western synthetic drugs).

But where to start? Sorry, dunno.

To be a true shaman, one must have a near-death experience so that one can traverse the mappa mundi and enter the spirit realm.

I've been missing out the interweb and the replies.
a little bit of update:
1) I'm reading lots of Kuna stuff as I was doing a Hawaiian Massage Course.
2) One of my classmate did some support work for people who do Vision Quest

I feel that Hawaiian Elders' teaching make sense to me, so I will start from Kuna rather than Native American stuff in regards to learning Shamanism

If you look in the back of most spiritual magazines you can find a list of teachers courses etc.

Shamanism like most other things has caught up with the 21st Century.

I would just like to add , as a recovering addict , that I have practiced Shamanism and I am abstinent from all mood and mind altering drugs. that includes caffine tobacco and alcohol
