Yeah Quorn can only be found in the UK as far as I can tell. I've certainly never seen it anywhere else. I don't think the French or Luxembourgish have discovered the concept of vegetarian sausages or burgers yet to by honest!

Not that I mind because it creeps me out being too meat-like for my taste, like a lot of Cauldron veggie sausages and stuff (anyways I don't think much Cauldron stuff is vegan).

Besides I'm a little addicted to tofu these days so I'm more than happy living off that.

Oh also (I guess I'm aiming this at the UK people) has anyone tried vegetarian/vegan haggis? All full of rice and lentils and veggies and spices and herbs and other such delights. I've never had real haggis but my housemate bought it by mistake thinking it was real haggis, and actually realised he prefers it so just buys that now!

I also taught another of my housemates (rugby boy, bodybuilding boy, practically cries if dinner doesnt contain meat, you know the type...) how to cook tofu so it actually tastes pleasant and he's started substituting that for meat in sandwiches every once in a while... he also uses soy milk now instead, though his dad won't allow it in the house over holidays. We'll get them all, eventually

They sell Quorn here in Michigan in two supermarkets in town.

Along with the Boca burgers and lightlife products.

yes I have tried vegan haggis from Sainsbury's and found it to be quite addictive

have never tried omni haggis even when I was a meat eater as the thought of it turns my stomach YUK

Processed fungus based meat replacement, with egg powder in it. Pretty grim in my view, but some people like it I suppose.

It sounds really gross. I've never seen it over here though, and I'm kinda glad!

ALL Quorn contains egg. Basically, Quorn is a fungus that grows on egg-based cultures.

Oh I've heard horrible things about that cookbook...that all the recipes have tons of fake meats and "cheese." I recommend Veganomicon, Vegan with a Vengeance, and Get it Ripe. All of those cookbooks focus on more wholesome foods instead of so much over processed stuff.

Edited to add: These books do still have recipes using tofu and seitan. But if you want to avoid those they have lots of recipes that don't. And to me there is a distinction between seitan I make at home and all of the fake "meats" in the grocery store...mine has fewer ingredients and isn't overly processed.

My sister's boyfriend made her a meal with some slices of veggie sausages and after the first bite she was so convinced that they were meat that she made him go and get the packet out of the bin to prove they were meatless..

I don't mind this type of stuff from time to time. Sometimes I like to have something I can really bite into.

if you want old-style traditional British vegan recipes then Eva Batt's cookbook is fantastic. These recipes are from back in the day, when they only had soya milk and TVP to work with! But all the recipes I've made from there have been great. Also there is not one but TWO recipes for PARKIN* in it.
PIES and anything involving Potatoes features heavily.
As do teacakes.

Re. the original "Skinny Bitch" book, the narrative voice of the book is very similar to "eating disorder voice". I would hesitate to recommend it for that reason. Anyone with unhappiness or concerns or insecurities about their body or their weight or their appearance or their body fat percentage etc. etc. etc. should definitely not read this book in my opinion. Only read it if you are going to be able to laugh it off and not take it to heart. Also there are some very harrowing and graphic descriptions of animal abuse in it which I found distressing.

*for non-Brits, PARKIN is a kind of cake popular in the North of England that involves black treacle.
