Tony raises his hand as a non-smoking, non-drinking gay vegan.

All though I prefer to be called queer....since gay has become a target market group from everything from liquor to automobiles and real estate.

I refuse to be a "lifestyle".

I used to walk in the gay pride march...until it turned into a gay pride parade.

Before I come across as some sort of dour, crabby sourpuss I think pride parades/gay have a purpose...but I found a pride march a more powerful statement.

I usually go back and forth between assimilationist and isolationist. It's heterophobia that keeps me from being in isolationist. I have to admit if I could find a local, vegan, LGBT owned market I'd rather put my money in their pockets than the local national chain.

tony, i second that. i don't really take it as a lifestyle. it's part of my character and clearly defines what we like when it comes to choosing a partner but i don't go out on the scene and do not really like to think of myself as part of it.. we're more individuals who happen to be gay..

Well I just thought it would make an interesting discussion really, from how I closed the post with that I know a few straight guys that people assume are gay because they're vegan.

Mainly, because it's a strange assumption when there really isn't that many vegans who're actually gay.

I've only posted on two vegan forums, the first I got banned because i'm apparently not vegan, and this one - I'm not entirely sure what VBB is but i'll have a look.

Nothsa I can say I have been called gay for being (although it was a more highly offensive term).
I think it was someone from my high school (I became vegan after highschool) and they saw on my myspace or something.
I went to an all boys, Catholic school so being gay was highly looked down upon.

For what it's worth I know two gay vegans but don't think that sexual preference has anything to do with being vegan.

Just googled 'vegan dating site' and found this http://www.veganpassions.com/.

Don't know if you or anyone was after a dating site, but it's there.

Nah. What is hetero or gay? Gender is a social/cultural construction. What's fluid is culture and our individual experience of it.

Definitely the actual percentage of "gay" people is greater than 1.5%. I suspect it's quite a bit lower than 10%, but again, it's based on a cultural construction, so it doesn't really matter. I simply find myself in too many groups with other people who identify as other than 'straight,' but too few where others don't, to agree with those numbers. However, there could always be people I am unaware of, so it could be greater than I am thinking. My guess would be more or less 5%. When gay people say 10%, I always think they are deliberately skewing the number to make themselves sound more important.

On another vegan forum I go to, there was a thread about sexual orientation, and it seemed like there were as many LGB people as not.

I think "rug munch" is one of the most beautiful phrases in the language. Wonderful sound.

I disagree Clem! I think that "tipping the velvet" is a much more poetic metaphor! (think it's Victorian in origin)

Just found this thread. These days I use the term queer but I am still OK with being called a lesbian.
I noticed that no one as posted in a while, are you all still active on the board?

Still around, just not much gay vegan news I guess :) Great to see another queer vegan from the US on here -- we are few and far between! There are a couple of groups on Facebook, but they aren't very active either. I've only met three other gay guys who are vegan in all my travels.
