because of the car culture people take jobs and move to areas which are not commutable (in easy way) by other means. So when in the past you simply just woudnt take jobs out of reach or live out of reach, car culture and cheap petrol means that thats not a problem any more.
I couldnt personally do that, and only look for jobs which are easily reachable by public transport - or like my current one, by walking
But its true, the public transport system in this country is abysmal, and one reason for that (after the destruction of it via rampant privatisation) is the car culture. Private cars jam up the streets so that the buses cant travel fast and efficiently.
In manchester there is a congestion charge scheme coming up for public vote. I think its a wrong way to implement change, but thats the only option on the cars. If it goes through it would revolutionise the public transport network in greater manchester with massive investments into improvements in rail, tram and bus networks.
I have love/hate relationship with cars. Hate because of what they represent and do, destroy communities, pollute, climate change, fragmentation of transport, all kinds of destructive things. Love because a good car is nice to drive, convenient and so on. I've owned maybe 15 cars in my life so far and the current 700 pound VW Polo is the most expensive one so far, so most of my driving has been with pieces of shits
