Frozen edamame (soybean pods) - such a delicious snack! Use just steam them or nuke them in the microwave, sprinkle them with salt and pop the little beans out of the pods with your mouth (the pods aren't edible)

I'd like to add agave nectar (forgive me if it's been mentioned but I didn't see it). Great honey substitute and low glycemic. I love it with my herbal tea!

Ye Gawds.. where's the hummus?!

It's only the greatest vegan food item ever made.

Hummus is the key. Hummus will change your life.

Mix it with all vegetables. Mix it with any grain. Use it as a cheese substitute. Turn brussel sprouts into something to look forward to, etc.

He he, you really like your hummus J, don't you? ;)

I'd say that hummus is not a basic food, it's made up of basic foods (chick peas, tahini, garlic, lemon juice and whatever you have in it), so unless we're adding our favourite recipes I'd say it shouldn't be there.

This is true. It's fine either way. But if we're only adding whole foods... then there's like hundreds and hundreds of vegetables, fruits, grains, legumes, nuts, seeds out there. Like here's a list for example:

I've got to admit hummus is an essential food item for me. I've tried making it myself, several times and it tastes disgusting so I always buy it and it is an absolute must have.
Hummus sandwiches, hummus veggie wraps, hummus and jacket potatoes, hummus on toast, hummus and crackers/breadsticks, hummus and veggie sticks, hummus and roasted veggies, hummus and salad, hummus and veggie burger. Oh the list is endless and it's so damn tasty. I think hummus is my all time favourite vegan food :D

talking about hummus, how about tahini?

actually i have a question about it because i've noticed that many of you seem to use it as a condiment for veggies.

do you buy the roasted (more dark coloured one) or the white (i presume non-roasted or peeled seeds) version?
i've only tried the darker one and find it a bit bitter sometimes.. just thought i'd see what other people make of the other sort.

General comment: I know that although most vegans are so because of ethical reasons, I think that a large proportion are also in the game because they want to be healthier, so I am a bit surprised to see here listed items that by all standards are not exactly healthy

Ok, how about flax seeds (ground), natural PB, and nutritional yeast? Those are all rather healthy I would say...

Indeed for ground flax seeds as I mentionned above, flax oil being prone to oxydation. Peanut butter would be OK if it weren't for its partially burned fats and lost antioxydants(resveratrol) from high heat. I do consume roasted peanuts from time to time but I keep it to a minimum.

I think yellow split peas are very high in protein. Red lentils (dried) have about 13 grams of protein per serving, and yellow I've seen have about 10-11 grams. Green split peas have about 9 grams or so. I just thought they should be categorized in the protein section..
