get back in the gym working upper body and core

Since I started biking seriously I've only been to the gym infrequently. I hadn't been at all this year before this week when I decided to get back in for general reasons and to help with my diet. I have been doing jacknife pushups, pullups, and pushups with some regularity, though. I have ridden over 1000 miles for transportation so far this year, so that's a deterrent to extra physical activity. I used to be big on working legs, but I probably will work them once a month or less. Olys are out. I haven't done neat core exercises like saxon side bends in a while.

We have passed the halfway mark. How are people doing?

I only set my goals 2 months ago but am doing okay.

Here are my goals and current weight in brackets

Squat - 160kg (138kg)
Deadlift - 215kg (2x185kg)
Bench - 115kg (102.5)
Overhead - 90kg (85kg)
15 bw chinups (5  )
10 bw pullups (5  )

I'll add a couple more goals:

close coc#2 with both hands (10 reps left and right hand with coc#1)
front squat 150kg (130kg)

LOL, just read back the whole thread, sounds like some people did indeed let the crack get in the way of clear thinking, and some could have used more of it.

My status report, gutted that half of the year has gone already and i havent reached a single goal yet!!!

JP wrote:First the crackpipe goals out of the way, by the next summer I HAVE TO DO THE FOLLOWING:
- 260 deadlift
- 120kg log

because those are common weights in the comps i am planning to do.

aye, have to do etc, but havent :D

- squat 227.5kg (7.5kg improvement)
- bench press 150 paused (current 145 touch and go)
- deadflift 600lbs/272.5kg (current 235, so 37.5kg improvement)

currently havent trained squat much at all, bench is 150 narrow grip but not paused, and deadlift has stalled at 245...

other goals:
- 125kg log
- 220kg oly lifting total "relatively" close to accepted rules, if not quite there
- 400lbs/182.5kg front squat
- 105kg strict press

log is at 115
oly total hasnt changed, but have done 127.5 jerk, now just need to learn to clean properly :D
front squat is at 165, havent moved for a while
strict press is at 102.5kg - very close with this one :D

Hmm, Im pretty sure I had a goal of reaching 220 (100+120) kg total, but it seems I havent posted it in the thread.

Anyway, current total is 194 (90+104) so all I have to do is add 10kg to snatch and 16kg to CJ. Sounds easy :D .

symptom of how badly we are doing at the mo in the vegan strength field is how few commented on this one :D

Anyway, got my first goal! 105 strict press.

Hope to get at least one more before the end of the year lol!

Congrats JP, and good luck :D

I didn't post any goals at the start of the year, but I'll post some second-half goals now. By the end of the year I plan to:

Deadlift 500 lbs
Farmer's 275/hand for 60'
Log Press 225 lbs
Squat 345 lbs
Strict Press 175 lbs

Can I jump in here? I've decided that I want to get into lifting so my goals for the next 6 months are:

Train 3x a week for 6 weeks to get started and form a habit
Concentrate on good form (thankyou Stumptuous.com!)
Progress sensibly
Remember that rest is as important as training
Log every training session for motivation

I have no idea what kinds of weight goal are possible yet so I'm just going to see how I go

Great decision! :)

As for my 2008 goals, I'm trying to shed some lard now, so no crack pipe strenght goals. Actually, losing fat is itself a crack pipe goal for me :) Anyway, we'll see.

P.S. I made a DL PB (120kg) while on a 2000kcal diet, so it won't be a waste of time even if I fail in cutting, I guess :)

Ok homies, 2 months to go. Who is going to nail some of those pipe-driven goals set almost 12 months ago????

buzz wrote:Hmm, based on gains made in the last year, and largely on fantasyland reality, mine are as follows;

Squat - 205kg - think this is doable, as isn't really a weakness for me, and steady gains should come.
Bench - won't focus on it as usual, but will still shoot for 145 by end of the year.
Deadlift - main priority really - let's say 235, higher is crack pipe, lower is not an option.

Other stuff;

Push press - 120kg
Log press - 115kg
18" deadlift - 260kg, fuck it, 270kg
Yoke - 10m with 370kg

Also - do some more OLY shit, and learn technique better on at least cleans and snatches, also do some overhead squatting too. Bodyweight - become a fucking mutant, ideally 115kg steady by end of the year, and not all power belly either.

Comps - nail novice comps, and run a few comps too. Place midway on some. Get more consistant with events, and work on weaknesses like speed and farmers. Think that's it, for now :)

Fuck, must have been planning on eating A LOT of carbs. Shows how little progress can be made in a year really, but hoping to make some last minute sneaky pb's on squat and deadlift. Bench - not a chance. Push press and log, I could see minor pb's there too if all goes well in the next couple months.

Lesson of 2008 - Sometimes the mind acts autonomously from the body, especially when the pipe is involved!

Get out on the bike more
Compete in a triathlon/adventure race
Move into midfield for my football team
Not set a climbing goal yet, but there will be one. Will have to see how the shoulder responds to the return to the wall.

I think someone hacked my account :?
