Post-workout muscle aches

Postby estaphuam » Sat Jan 26, 2008 10:29 pm

Hello everyone,

I'm hoping someone would ease my worries over this. I had a moderate workout for my shoulders today (nothing big, dumbbell presses). As I was walking out of the gym into the cold weather, the minute I breathed in the cold air, the muscle (or tendon) connecting my shoulder to my neck seized up for a second, then gradually loosened but with a considerable amount of pain. It is still sore now when massaged or when I turn my neck in certain ways.

I tried doing research online but I'm not sure what to look for. I tried cramps, but the symptoms don't match. Has anyone experienced something like this? You'd spare me a trip to the doctor :)

Many thanks.

check out spasms rather than cramp. Muscle spasm is when the muscle is trying to protect itself. Muscle between neck and shoulders could be Scalenes, (skeletal muscles) trapezius. I suspect your scalenes because of inhaling cold air more than traps as these are surface/global muscles. Might even be elevator scapulae or sternocleidomastoid. Again they can spasm in cold temperatures. Infact it may not have even been the cold air, if you have over worked the area this can lead to muscle spasm.

Obvious question did you cool down effectively and stretch. Where you covering the area ie with outdoor clothing and scarf? (sounding like a nagging mother)

Thanks for the info Birdbloke - looks like your diagnosis is correct :)

JP - It's wonderful to post here again - I really appreciate the heads up. But I have been browsing the forum regularly.

Things in Jordan pretty well (can't complain). One friend of mine has been a strict vegan for a couple of years now, which is amazing really! Four of my friends are now vegetarian, and that's even more mind-boggling because now I can sit in public with a group of people and not have any carcasses on the table ;)

My sister has also gone full veggie now. So I guess things have been moving forward. I keep my activist muscles going - one discussion at a time, and I try to be a good example of physical (and mental - when I can afford it) health. :D
