Vastus Medialis

Postby Seitanist » Thu Jan 24, 2008 9:18 am

For about a year now I've had a slight pain in that muscle - the tear drop one on the inside of the knee. It has never been enough to keep me from riding or weight-lifting, even when I was doing 100-150 miles a week during the summer. Sometimes the pain shifts more to the side, and it's always very dull, never shooting or very intense. But persistent and chronic - yes. To the point that I'm serious annoyed by it. I checked with a physical therapist and they gave me some "strengthening" exercises but I don't think it's a weak muscle, I work out too much for that to be the case. Another therapist said it might be weak compared to the vastus lateralis (outside thigh muscle).

Has anyone had experience with a long-term, annoying injury like this? What I don't understand is why this has not improved. I have taken a week, a week and a half off from cycling before and the pain returns every time. If it was a serious injury it would prevent me from cycling and doing squats, but it never seems to flare up too bad, just remain in the background, nagging at me. I can't figure out what type of injury would persist for this long without causing serious damage or healing.

Any thoughts? Thank you!

Very common weakness with VM in comparison with VL. Despite your general routine workouts. So not suprised that your therapists have already pointed this out. Also check out the Vastas Medialis Obliques, found medially superior to knee. Most subjects this section of fibres from the VM doesnt engage enough or at all. Advise you get some professional advice from a fitness/sports professional on how to train these areas. And stretch the VL.
